Place a ball on the edge of the penalty area.

Dynamic Warm Up - Progression 3 (10 mins)

Progression 3

Players compete in pairs - one as defender, one as attacker. Defender marks attacker tight.

Attacker must, at a time of his choosing, spin off the defender and try to get to the ball - on the edge of the penalty area first. Defender, defending passively, must try to stop him - no physical contact.

Whoever gets to the ball first can shoot. Defender is unable to sprint to the ball until the attacker has spun off.

Drill - Screening the Ball (10 mins)

Organisation

Create an area 30 x 10 yards.

Split players into pairs - 2 x Red and 2 x Blue. One player from each pair acts as a server and remains on the edge of the area, as above.

Instructions

Red server passes the ball into red player, who must screen the ball from the blue defender for 5 seconds before returning the ball to the red server. Once the red player passes the ball, the blue player seeks to receive a pass from the blue server etc. Blue Defender will defend passively at first only but will, upon the instruction of the coach, change to non-passive.

Rotate players and servers regularly.

Coaching Points:

Player receiving the ball must be on their toes - get to the ball before the defender.

When the ball is at the players feet, remain balanced, bend keness and lean slightly forward, so the player can't be pushed off the ball. Be side on in order to keep the ball as far away from the Opponent as possible.

Use arms to make your body wider and stick your backside out! Clench fists to create a solid upper body. Place hands on the Opponent to monitor his positioning - if he tries to come around the sidse, spin off to the other side.

Be aware of options.

Progression 1

Player receiving the ball must screen the ball and then try to turn the defender and pass the ball to the other server. If successful, the receiving player continues to receive passes from the server's. If not, the defender becomes the receiving player, and the receiving player the defender.

Note - spin off with ball at feet if the defender tries to come around one side.

Introduce an extra player for each team within the grid, and place a neutral players along the attacking half length of the grid. Neutral players to try to create passing lines the length of the grid.

Instructions

Receiving player can only receive the ball in the shaded area (defensive half).

Receiving player still aims to try to play the ball to the blue server - however, receiving player now has options:

Screen and play the ball back to the server to play the ball in again.

Screen and await his team mate to create a passing line.

Use a neutral player to play off.

Turn.

Alternate play and ensure neutral players move into the attacking half each time - in order to encourage screening the ball and turning.

Progression 3

If the receiving player screens the ball and returns it to the server, the server can enter the grid immediately.

Red teams aim is to score; Blue teams aim is to obtain possession and return the ball to the red server within 10 seconds, whereupon play continues.

Progression

The Red player receiving the ball and screening, can return the ball to teh red server who then is able to join in the play, thus creating an overload.
