Circle Tag Warm-up (15 mins)

Organization:

-15-17 Players

-see diagram for equipment and set-up

-working in groups of 4-5, all players except one (the tagger) form a cirle holding hands, then pick choose one player to be the target. The task is for the tagger to try and touch the target on the back, whilst the players work as a group, shuffling both directions, to protect the target. Switch roles if someone is tagged or every minute.

Coaching Points:

-how can communication help us to protect the Target?

-what movements do we need to do with our body?

-how can we use our body to make it more difficult for the tagger?

1v1 Defending Skill Practice (15 mins)

Organization

-8-10 players

Practice begins with attacker A playing to attacker B with back to goal. Defender must apply pressure & attempt to win the ball. If they win the ball they still attempt to score in wide small goals.

Coaching Points

1. Speed of approach & angle when closing down 2. Slow down the last yard & be ready for any quick moves or tricks by opponent 3. Body shape - angled & use of arms for balance/blocking 4. Jockeying to show defenders one way 5. Acceleration to close down 6. Deceleration to slow down when approaching defender 7. Balance & proprioception to be in a position to challenge for the ball 8. Feet & hip coordination 9. Agility

SSG Defending (15 mins)

4v4 SSG with man-to-man marking. Each player pairs up with a player from the opposite team, their responsibility when defending is to know where that player is and prevent them from scoring.

Coaching Points

1. Speed of approach & angle when closing down 2. Slow down the last yard & be ready for any quick moves or tricks by opponent 3. Body shape - angled & use of arms for balance/blocking 4.
