1 v 1 Defending Shadow (15 mins)

Set Up:

Players are working in their designated areas. In groups of 2, players will work from sideline to sideline.

How It Works:

In pairs, one player with a ball is the passive attacker and the other is a passive defender. The attacker dribbles the ball at a slower rate to their right side and the defender is in a shape to force the attacker to the attacker’s right. The defender keeps their distance and once they reach one end line then the 2 players switch roles.

In picture, players are forcing left (attackers right). Players will try both sides numerous times.

Keys:

1.Close down quickly with stutter step to slow down before attacker

2.Block one side by having back leg farther inside than front foot.

3.Be on one side of ball (don’t be in line or attacker can go both ways)

4.Stay on toes and stutter step (stutter step allows for defender to react quicker when attacker tries to accelerate).

5.Keep Distance (2 arms lengths away), back up at same pace as attacker moves forward.

6.Knees and back bent

7.Back up on angle (not straight back)

8. Tackle when opportunity arises (bad touch, slow pass, etc...)

1 v 1 Attacking vs. Defender (25 mins)

Set Up:

In a 15 X 10 grid. Coach is server. Defending line is on opposite side of balls and 12 yards away from attackers. Attackers start in middle of grid.

How It Works:

Split players into 2 teams. Coaches’ passes ball into attacker and defender comes out to stop attacker. Attacker is trying to dribble over line. Switch attackers and defenders after there are many attempts. Keep score. Each team defends for 5-7 MIN.

1 v 1 Transition Game (20 mins)

Set Up:

Goals are 20 yards apart (can use small goals with no goalkeepers). One team is lined up beside one goal and the other is lined up beside the other. Each player in line has a ball.

How It Works:

Attacker comes out against defender waiting. Attacker is trying to beat defender 1 v 1 and finish. Once the attacker loses the ball or shoots then the attacker becomes a defender with a new attacker coming out. Defender goes to back of line after sequence. If attackers stop going forward or slow to make the attack unrealistic then end the sequence.

Game With Focus On Defending (15 mins)

Set Up:

25-35 x 15-20 Grid with goals (either open or with goalkeepers). 4 v 4 in grid.

How It Works:

Teams are divided (king's court if more than 8 players). A normal scrimmage with restrictions on defenders. Defenders cannot win ball (unless one of the cues exist). Defenders can intercept balls, block passes, and steal the ball off attackers if the ball is exposed.

Coach's CHOICE: Can play an open game and look to highlight defending.

Keys (General: Delay, Support (Width/Depth), Compactness, Cover/Balance, Control/Restraint

Surprise):

1.Close down quickly with stutter step to slow down before attacker

2.Block one side by having back leg farther inside than front foot.

3.Be on one side of ball (don’t be in line or attacker can go both ways)

4.Stay on toes and stutter step (stutter step allows for defender to react quicker when attacker tries to accelerate).

5.Keep Distance (2 arms lengths away), back up at same pace as attacker moves forward.

6.Knees and back bent

7.Back up on angle (not straight back)

8. Tackle when opportunity arises (bad touch, slow pass, etc...)
