1 v 2 with counter goals (15 mins)

Organization:

Players will review in this exercise the Key factors of First defender(Pressure) and learn coaching points for Second defender(support/cover)

-The activity takes place in a 18 x 12 area.

-The coach passes to Player A, Player A passes to Player B. Player C pressures to act as First defender and Player A acts as 2nd defender. Player B attempts to finish.

-If Player A or C(Defenders) win the ball they pass to the Coach.

-Attackers receive 5 points if they score and defenders receive 1 points for winning the ball and passing to Coach

-The coach continues the activity by serving to defender on opposite side and alternates in this fashion. Players return to their original line.

-Rotate defenders to attackers after 5 minutes..

-Keep score and make it competitive

Coaching Points

1st defender

--Speed of Approach/Angle of approach: The defender should quickly travel to pressure as the ball travels to the attacker...long strides..Get there do not dive in!

What to observe as the player travels to pressure(cues)

-If the attacker's 1st touch is good the defender must take smaller steps to slow down

-If the attacker's 1st touch is BAD that is a cue to maintain speed and win the ball

-can the defender bend run to force the attacking player one way to make play predictable...

-Distance: Defender should be roughly arms length away from attacker, take on a side-on body balanced position position, knees bent & weight on front of feet

-Eye on ball

-Delay(Patience) - Be patient as it allows teammates to recover in a game but pinch it from the attacker if you can

-Threaten to win the ball when the time is right. Don't just watch!

2nd defender(Cover)

-distance from pressuring defender

-angle: can he see the player w/ the ball and also the 2nd attacker(player without it)

-communication

Organization:

-same as previous except it 2 v 2..

-when the defender receives the pass from the coach he/she can pass to either Player B or D. Defenders must re-act accordingly to determine who will become 1st and 2nd defender.

-Attackers become defenders after 5 min.. complete 2 times...total:20 min

Coaching Points:

-same as above +

-Quick transition when reversing roles as first and second defender.

(How do defenders react when the ball is transferred from first attacker to 2nd attacker??)
