Learning Objectives

Technical Technical
Focus on the actual shape of the players when defending. A useful thing to say to them is FAST-SLOW-SIDEWAYS-LOW That way they understand the technique and can easily remember it.
Technical Tactical
Defenders will close down quickly and try to force the Attackers either backwards or sindeways
Technical Physical
Good spacing between the Defender and Atfacker is roughly 3 feet.

1v1 Warm Up/Competition (40 mins)

Organization

Defenders will have the ball on one side of the grid. Give each partnership a lot of space to move. Whole exercise will last most of the session (anywhere from 30-45 Minutes) Each Progression should last from 10-15 minutes. (feel it out and give them more or less time as needed)

Field Set up

Field Size 30x30. Half of the players on one side, half of the players on the other side. Place small cones across the middle of the grid to show a 'lane' for the players to play in.(as shown in progression 3)

Detail

The player that starts with ball players it across to their partner and runs to close the player down. The atacking player will then dribble to the other side of the grid while the defender jockeys for the ball in good defensive shape. Once the attacking player reaches the other side of the grid, the players return to their original positions, but the the players will switch roles. Defender to Attacker/Attacker to Defender. Please watch the video that I copied in the email and try to teach the players the proper Defensive Shape

Progressions

Defending players are NOT allowed to tackle in the first progression or the second progression of the exercise. Use these progressions to teach about the proper way of defending 1v1.

Progression 2 will see the defender play the pass to the attacker, then sprint AROUND the attacker and try to get themselves into their shape again after chasing the Attacker down. The attacker does not start running until the defender taps them on the shoulder. NO TACKLING THE ATTACKER. Exercise ends and restarts the same way as the first progression.

Progression 3 wil have the defender attempt to delay the striker from entering the end zone.(This progression will have Points that the players can win) The defender can not tackle the attacker until the attacker enters the end zone. The way the points work is as follows:

-Attacker enters endzone - 1 point for the Attacker

-Atacker Dribbles all the way to the end of the grid - 2 points for the Attacker and the players switch roles

-Defender Delays the Attacker from entering the end zone(Dribbles outside of the lane/The Attacker turns to face backwards) - 2 Points for the Defender and the players switch roles

-Defender tackles the Attacker once she is in the end zone - 1 Point for the defender and the players switch roles
