Warmup : Overlap Technical / Unopposed (20 mins)

Organization:

- Players split into 2 teams

- Team 1 on outside of square w/o ball (Blue team)

- Team 2 on inside of blue square w/ ball (White team)

Instructions:

Part 1

- Players 1 (white team) finds a blue player on the outside and plays him a pass(player 2)

- Player 1 then opens up to receive facing the field or performs given turn

- Player 2 plays a pass back to player 1

- Play for 1 minute keep track of passes received, switch roles

- Vary technique of pass (outside of foot pass for disguise, etc.)

Part 2 (overlap) - See B

- Players do same as part 1

- Now player on outside (blue) plays pass back to white player once he opens up

- White player takes touch inside, blue player makes overlapping run around white

- Blue player receives pass after overlap, carries on finding next pass

- White player replaces blue on outside

Coaching Points:

- Cues for pass

- Quality of pass / communication

- Open to field, Receive on back foot if space available

- Speed of next movement

Overlap

- Touch inside to create space, signal overlap

- Technique / Disguise of pass

- Overlapping run

- Quality / Weight of pass (to feet or space, etc.) and return pass

- Communication (hold / release)

Progressions

- Add floating defenders (if they win ball, player who lost becomes defender - identified by holding pinnies)

Overlap Unnoposed

Organization:

Set up in channels as above. working in twos side by side. One ball between them.

Instructions:

Player Plays flat pass to team mate, who touches in the field, and dribbles at the angle, creating the space for the overlap run. Pass is then played, and players dibbles out the end. Once area is clear, next pair go the opposite way.

Coaching Points:

- Direction and size of first touch.

- Dribble in at speed.

- Angle of run, to create space.

- Timing of overlapping run.

Overlap 2v1

Organization:

Same as before, exept this time, 4 players involved.

Instructions:

Player players long driven pass to opposite side, player controls and player flat pass to partner, to trigger movements as before. The 4th players, comes in to put pressure on as defender (Passive).

Player now performs overlap pass, or performs swivel hips, (uses run as disguise)

Player rotate and repeat.

Coaching Points:

Player in possession driving inwards and at defenders

Dribbling with nearest foot to support player

Recognition of overlapping player to help unbalance defense

Observation of defenders position to help decide best course of action

Timing of pass to overlapping player

Are players using the correct foot/surface to pass the ball

Timing of run of supporting player

Communication (hold, set etc.)

Screen 4

Organization:

2) two shaded channels in the outside as shown

3) 5 v5 or adjust to numbers:

3) Balls always start with white team

4) switch sides every 4-5min

Instructions:

1) Regular game

2) To score must find a player on the outside and look to overlap or 3rd man run

First 5 minutes No defenders allow on wide channel

- Next 5 minutes: 1) 1 defender allow 2) drive inside the field to create space

3) Recover ball > clean it > combine

Coaching Points:

For 3rd man run

Timing of the run

Direction of the run based on space, pressure, teammates

Awareness of end product as making the run : Finish play or beat defender

Quality of passing (timing, weight, accuracy)

Awareness of receiving players

Coaching Points:

1) Wide (to create 1v1 and or passing lanes

2) Penetration

3) Improvisation (1v1s , Runs to combine)

4) 1st ataccker decision to penetrate or possess

5) Recognition to combine centrally to compact defense before going wide
