Description

First Session of the season and with group, starting with improving the quality of the first touch because the first touch starts everything that happens next and is important to improve everytime players play. In this session I have allowed more time for the Final game to let me better understand the players overall to plan for future sessions and the season development plan. I have also allowed extra time because of team talk and introduction at beginning may take longer than a normal session.

Warm Up (10 mins)

Organization:

Four 15 yard by 15 yard grids, 1 ball for each grid, cones on corner of each grid, evenly distribute players.

10 minutes

Instructions:

Players are to pass to feet with teammates within their grid, after making a pass, the player must go to touch the cone, after they touch the cone they are now are live again in the play. (Example, see diagram in sequence 1, 2, 3)

Coaching Points:

Focus on correcting any technical problem with first touch "toe up, ankle locked, hips open"

(technical/skill development)

If technique is satisfactory then quickly move on to tactical explanation of improving first touch, if not continue to improve technique and do not move onto 4 D's of first touch

Very briefly explain the first of Four D's to improving quality of first touch:

Decsion- surface of receiving, inside or outside of foot.

Direction- touch to where you want to play next

Distance-too big of touch will take ball back into presure, too small will require an extra touch to move out from body

Disguise- Don't be predictable, be creative (i.e. Cruyff turn, step away then step to)

Remind players to play to feet

If passes are slow, enoucrage players to make firm passes to ensure teammates will have to take 2 touches, improving quality of pass to teammates will create opporunity to improve first touch.

Progressions:

First touch must be across body (Decision-inside or outside of foot)

Must be two touches

Main Theme(Part 1/2) (20 mins)

Organization: 3v3(+4) 2 teams of 5 and 2 neurtal players, 30v25 field

Instructions: To score a point, players must pass to both neutral targets at each end of field without losing poessesion in between. Players allowed to use an outside player for a wall pass or combination but the outside player may not pass directly to the target at the end.

Roatate players.

Coaching Points:

Reiterate technical first touch points from warm up if technique failure is not allowing for success in activity, main focus should be 4 d's of first touch (individual tactics)

Decsion- surface of receiving, inside or outside of foot.

Direction- touch towards next pass, encourage north to south as first option, first touch brings me into the game

Distance- read the game, size of touch depending on pressure and space

Disguise- use a backheel cruyff turn or another variation of a creative turn to fake defender into thinking your playing one direction then play to opposite direction

Encourage players direction of first touch to play north and south because that is how they will score points, not points for keeping possesion from east to west. (group tactics)

Do not kill play by passing to close from player on width, allow space for their first touch to be positive.

Progressions:

When a ball is passed to player on width, they now take a touch into the field and are now a part of the game. Player who passed the ball is now replacing the reciever who has come into the game.

3 passes to opposite targets in succesion scores a point

Regression: Pass to 1 target is a point then must play to opposite to score again

Main Theme(Conditioned Game) (10 mins)

Organization: 45x30 field 6v6 Let teams organize their own formations or if parent coach has a specific fromation he/she wants to see then let them organize teams

Instructions: Play 6v6 with one team scoring against a goal with a goalkeeper (2 points) and the other team may core by a pass into a small goal (2 points) or dribbling through the gates(1 point), ball will always start from goalkeeper, switch side at halfway point.

Coaching Points:

Decsion- Can I move off ball to create space for first touch when I reieve

Direction- touch away from pressure, continue to encourage north to south as first option, switch fields as second option (team tactics)

Distance- read the game, size of touch depending on next option: pass, dribble, or shoot

Disguise- be creative and be unpredictable

Communication with teammates will help with first touch decision making.

Remind the quality of the first touch dictates everything that follows

For receiving aerial balls think back to arrivl activity of juggling ball control.
