I can do this! What can you do? (10 mins)

Objective:

Warm-up activity to work on coordination and familiarity with the ball

Organization:

Open space

Each player with a ball

Instructions:

1. Coach demonstrates something he/she can do without the ball 3-4 times to the players, saying "I can do this, can you?" Players must try to copy coaches action.

2. Ask the players to be the leader, and demonstrate what they can do without a ball, and then entire group tries to copy the player's action. Everyone gets a turn

Without a ball --> With a ball

1. Motor skills + Movement education

2. Balance

3. Coordination

 

Progressions:

 

Start: With the players demonstrating their ability to do the action without a ball

(P.1) - Incorporate using the ball

(P.2) - Try to come up with creative ways we can weave this activity into our theme for the day: Race cars.

Free Movement; Red Light - Green Light

Objective:

Getting the players to (1) change speed and direction with the ball away from pressure, using different surfaces. (2) comfortable dribbling in space, stopping the ball quickly, and escaping pressure.

Free movement --> Red light, Green light

Organization:

25 x 25 grid

Each player with a ball

Instructions:

1. Coach yells "green light" and players move freely with their ball in the grid, acting like cars by making the sound of an engine.

2. Coach yells "red light" and players must quickly get their ball under control and stop it from moving with the sole of their foot.

3. When the coach yells "green light", the players continue dribbling in space.

Coaching Points:

1. Messi + Ronaldo touches (small vs. big)

2. Movement - change in speed and direction. 

3. Balance and Coordination

4. Ball control - why do we want to keep the ball close to our feet?

5. How quickly can we stop the ball?

Progressions:

Start: With the players moving around freely playing Red light - Green light without the ball

(P.1) - Incorporate using the ball in the activity

(P.2) - If the ball goes out you've run out of gas! You must do 5 toe taps in order to refuel

(P.3) - If the police car (coach) tags you, you must freeze and stay frozen until another player comes by and kicks his/her ball through your legs.

Intersection - WATCH OUT!

Organization:

15 x 15 box

Color cones set out as shown

Two teams of 3-6

Each player with a ball

Instructions:

1. The players (cars) are looking to get to the shore (blue cones) and the city (yellow) but there is a lot of traffic and intersections along the way.

2.The players must keep their head up to avoid crashing into each other

3. If the player makes it to the other side that equals one point for him/her

4. (P) If the player crashed into another he/she loses a point

5. Play a couple of 2 minute rounds. Comparing each round to its previous score

Coaching Points (CP):

1. Keep your head up. How can we get across to the other side without crashing? What do we need to use (1) eyes (2) smaller touches

2. Messi vs. Ronaldo touches. How can we get across to the other side without crashing? What can we change while dribbling? (1) eyes (2) smaller touches

3. If the other person has his or her head down how can we let him/her know that they're about to run in with you? (1) Verbal cue = honking

4. What kind of touches can help us avoid a car crash  (1) Stopping it with the sole of the foot (2) Pull back (3) Cut

Progressions:

Start: With the players separated into two teams dribbling in the opposite direction.

(P.1) - If a player makes it to the other side without crashing that equals one point.

        After 2 rounds CP #1 --> Play --> CP #2

(P.2) - Shrink the space if it isn't challenging enough

(P.3) - If a player crashes into another he/she loses a point

       After a round CP #3 --> Play --> CP #4

(R) - Increase the space if it is too challenging

Game 3v3/4v4

Organization:

30 x 20

3v3 or 4v4s depending on the numbers

1 ball in each game; Extras on the side

Instructions:

1. Game

2. Can not defend or shoot within in the semi-circle around the goals

3. Keep the game in play. Have plenty of balls to the side.

Coaching Points:

1. Keep your head up

2. Messi / Ronaldo (small vs. big touches) - When and where?

3. Try to avoid the opponents and clumping together

4. Have fun
