Diamond drills 1

1/4 pitch area with a diamond set up between half way and penalty box.

Cone goals with a GK.

2 groups of 8 players, each group doing same drill on opposite sides of pitch.

Pattern as shown where striker D pulls away as C goes to meet pass from deepest player.

C and D combine to score with a 1 touch finish.

Rotation : A>B>C>D>queue, also swap groups to experience other side of pitch

*B and C to keep width

*timing of runs to meet passes

*movement to retain balance

Diamond drills 1 4v2

Now add 2 defenders from other group.

X starts central but should close down B and pressure his touch as 1st defender - this opens up passing channel for A - X will start to anticipate As pass so A and C should adjust positions to accomodate.

*Y should track Ds run as he would in a game

*Ds run must be timed so as not to run offside

*Cs 1st touch on the run under pressure from recovering X

Once C receives play 4v2 where X is recovering - again 1 touch finish.

Rotation same but swap the 2 ddefenders regularly

Progress by allowing more freedom for defenders whilst maintaining good principles and re-inforcing offside rule

GRP patterns

BOTH PATTERNS SHOWN ON SAME PAGE - PLAY PATTERN 1 ALTERNATE SIDES THEN PATTERN 2

LEFT PATTERN 1

Now play 6 blues v 4 reds starting in half width pitch until final third.

Red group attacks on other side alternately - the same 4 defenders moving across (or 2 plus the spares)

Now 10 makes the run, whils 7 and 11 maintain width.

The extra defender 6 can track 10s run but not go too early ie only after 10 moves.

4 and 5 play as centre backs.

RIGHT PATTERN 2

Play 6v4 in same scenario.

3 and 7 play 1v1 so 7 can move inside protecting ball.

Red 8 now provides a realistic challenge to 10 making his thru pass - 8 can help here.

2 must receive under pressure from recovering 3 and deliver a cross or cutback.

11 must be aware to keep 4 engaged by keeping width.

7 or 8 becomes the supporting midfielder as the others attack.

If reds win ball they score by passing thru cone goals - all restarts are with 2.

Conditioned game

Dependent on numbers player 10 v 7 (ideal) or 9v7, or 10v8.

Blues full backs must stay in wide channels unless defending.

Reds attack attempting to use one of the two patterns to score.

Blues score in cone goals.

All restarts are with reds in centre circle passing to full backs L and R alternately

*maintining width on both sides

*striker movement timing

*weight and accuracy of passes

Progress by allowing normal free play and remove restart condition.
