Free Flow Combination Pattern Play (20 mins)

Organization: 5-6 Player per group (can be more when 1st introducing the pattern). 2 players star in the middle with the ball. Player with the ball passes out to any player and switches places with them, player recieves ball in grid - passes to remaining player in the grid and then becomes the next player to receive the ball from an outside player. Pattern continues.

Coaching Points: Quality of passes. Proper angle to recieve balls, open up and play ball to next person quickly. Play the way you face.. Know where you are going with the ball before you receive. Play Passes to correct foot of recieiving player. Use as much of grid as possible.

Progression: Add defender to make more game like. Can put 2 teams and play 2 groups in same grid to create more traffic/awareness of space.

Notes: You can modify for more players. I think it works best with 5-6 players. Once you get 9, I would add another ball or split into groups.

3 Pass Inside-Out Combination Pattern (30 mins)

Organization: 3 Pass inside-out combination pattern. Pattern as shown. After players learn pattern add 1, then 2 defenders. Players must complete same pattern vs defenders. Playing area should be free for the players to choose how much space they need to complete the pattern.

Instructions: One of my favorite pattern play activities because it is free flowing, not rote, and the players must think & move to make it happen. Early in the activity, introduce communication and calling for the ball. Then clean up the angles of the support runs to assist in the middle combinations. Once they get that, add one defender, and the angles of support should make more sense to the players. With the defender added, coach the depth of support in relation to where the defender is at. Then add a second defender and see if they can still do the pattern. This is not a short activity because there are a lot of tactical coaching points & decisions that need to be made for fluid movement. Make sure your central midfielders and strikers understand the movements as it directly relates to their position.

Coaching Points: Off ball timing, movement, angles and distance of support runs, quick ball movement. Play 1 touch when possible, 2 touch if you must. Technical passing & receiving quality. Communication & calling for the passes. Reading the game and knowing what is going to happen next (and then next) as it develops and getting into that space at the correct time.
