Horse shoes

Left foot strikes from floor and Right foot from half volleys. Progress to using both feet as soon as possible.

Organization:

1.30 x 15 yard area, set up as shown

2.3 players

3.Repeat in other areas to create a ladder system

4.Multiple balls with each group

5. Horse shoes style play and have groups compete

Start:

1. have players begin by players hitting self goalkicks back and forth in partners using power technique

2. add full voley touch

3. progress to adding gk where applicable.

Progression 2:

Instructions:

Players work on striking the ball for power. Players start by trying to play the ball on the ground with laces through middle gate. Ball is stationary and even with cones. Players progress by taking prep touch towards second cone.

Diamond Drill 1

Organization:

Instructions:

The server plays the ball high in the air to the middle of the diamond. The GK player across the diamond leaves his starting position and wins the ball.

Coaching Points:

Catching technique (covered previous weeks)

Vocal

Balls of feet, knees, hands in the ready position

Jump off the foot closest to the goal to allow us to use the fargthest foot as protection.

Catch the ball at the highest possible point we can reach

Look to redistribute quickly

Same as before.

Instructions:

Ball is now served from the side. Adding a dummy to either catch (if the ball is away from dummy) or punch if the ball is (above or in front of a crowd)

Coaching Points:

Go in 100%

Catch when possible

Anticipate and read where the ball is going to be (we want to catch it in its path not where it is going to land) Intercept not landing pad

Dealing with crosses

Coach is serving under hand balls 2 yards from the endline and 3 yard outside the six. Coach may make short run so Gk can adjust position from shot to cross.

The GK is coming out and winning the ball in front of, over, between or behind the two dummys.

Coaching points:

Body shape of goalkeeper

WHY is the goalkeeper in this position. Movement to protect from shot, transitioning to movement to protect the cross.

Emphasize shouting for the ball

Footwork to get from near to middle (no back, shuffle)

See the game/body shape to see crosser and runners

Body shape when the shot or cross could be present

Picking up the flight early and intercepting as early as possible.

Mentally ready to attack the near post cross or between two players 100% but anticipate that the ball will go over your head.

After catch looking to play to the target player quickly, who needs to play coach very quickly

Progressions:

Ball is struck from ground from coach

Remove dummys and add 1 live player

Add 1 defender

Quick play concept

Smaller groups will play their keeper wars league table. Larger groups will play game from above.

Same as conceptual shootout but quick rotation is applied and is same as usual except ball is served from player behind the shooter. Teams have 3 minutes to score as many goals as possible.

Rotation: defender->GK->cone
