2. B passes to player 5 who feeds 6 and then drops back two yards. Player 6 feeds 7 who passes to B who sets to 5 to dribble into circle. B takes 5's position at edge of circle. Player 5 recommences pattern with outside players.

3. C plays ball to player 8, and runs around 8 and 9. Player 9 sets up C who collects to bring ball back into circle. Rotate central players after a couple of minutes,

Touch and Go (15 mins)

Numbers: group of 12 or 15

Grid: 25-30 yd diameter circle as above

Duration: 15 minutes

Organization: 6v3 or 8v4 with team A attempting to string together six consecutive passes for a point. Team B attempts to overturn possession and score in one of the small goals (2 yd wide) for a point each time. Once three points are scored by either team, switch out players.

Progression: team of six or eight now arranges itself so that exactly half of its players begin inside the circle and half outside. The players on the inside must keep possession, always attempting to switch with the players on the outside of the circle by passing the ball to them. They gain a point for each succesful pass out and player switch. As before, the team with less players gains a point by winning the ball and scoring in one of the three goals. Once three points are scored by either team, switch out players.

Coaching points: communication, proper movement and body shape, angles and timing of support, reaction/awareness, touch away from pressure, analysis of numbers up situations

Numbers-Up to Goal (20 mins)

Numbers: group of 12 or 15 with goalkeeper

Grid: 25-30 yd diameter circle as above

Duration: 20-25 minutes

Organization: Players A and B perform a 1-2 with A then passing long to player C. B overlaps A and performs another 1-2 with C. Meanwhile, A has run around (or touched) the cone at X and has become a defender. B and C attack the goal in a 2v1 situation. Rotate players A to B to C etc.

Progression: B and C perform 1-2 plus overlap before attacking. If time allows, add a target player at D and an all-time defender at E and progress to a 3v2 situation. In this case, players A and E would be in different color bibs and woul remain defenders throughout for clarity. Players B and C would rotate. Following the two aforementioned combinations between B and C, the ball would be passed to the target player. Player E is permitted to defend D once ball travels into C the first time. E initially applies light pressure to Ds first touch.

Consider using other side of field for symmetry of development.

Coaching points: communication, proper movement and body shape, angles and timing of support, reaction/awareness, analysis of numbers up situations, appropriate usage of five main 2v1 combinations (dish off, 1-2, overlap, decoy, blind-sided run).

Grid: 25 x 40yd

Duration: approx 40 minutes

Organization: 7v7 or 8v8 scrimmage with emphasis on quick decision-making. Consider variations before allowing unlimited play:

1. two touch max

2. one touch max

3. may only pass to 3rd man

4. as per 3 plus touch restriction

Coaching points: communication, proper movement and body shape, angles and timing of support, reaction/awareness, touch away from pressure, analysis of numbers up situations
