ABCs & Ball Mastery (10 mins)

Organization:

-10-12 players

-see diagram for set-up and equipment

-area approx. 20x20 (adapt for age/ability/numbers)

Players will perform a variety of movements through the gates, then work on a variety of ball mastery techniques in a smiliar format.

Progressions/Variations:

-start with no ball and focus on different locomotion - running, high knees, skipping, lateral shuffling

-add ball to work on ball mastery techniques - inside/outside cuts, toe taps, "ball boxing" (inside touches side-to-side)

-take a couple of minutes to show them how to practice keep-ups

Coaching Points:

-close control in tight spaces

-get head up to scan for space, pathways, gates, players

-use of both feet and all surfaces of feet

-lots of touches of the ball

Dribbling Technical (15 mins)

Organization:

-10-12 players

-see diagram for set-up and equipment

-area approx. 20x20 (adapt for age/ability/numbers)

Players will dribble in and out of different gates with a variety of progressions to gradually increase the tempo and demand on the players.

Progressions/Variations:

-players dribble in and out of the gates

-add time limits/number of gates to run/dribble through gates to add competition (30-45 secs)

-add "gate goalkeepers" that can block the gates (5 sec max.)

-add roaming "defenders" that can tag (or tackle?) the dribblers, forcing them to do 10 toe taps

Coaching Points:

-toe pointed down for positive touches forward with laces

-use all parts of the foot for changing directions

-close dribbling in tight areas

-accelerate/run with the ball into open spaces

-get head up to scan for space, pathways, gates, players

-use of both feet

1v1 Dribbling Skills (15 mins)

Organization:

-10-12 players

-see diagram for set-up and equipment

-area approx. 20x20 (adapt for age/ability/numbers)

Players will be in pairs to play 1v1 with the aim of beating opponent and dribble through a gate. If a player "scores", opponent then starts with the ball. If opponent steals ball play is continuous.

Progressions/Variations:

-change opponents (3-5 mins)

Coaching Points:

-awareness of space, defender, gates

-use moves/dribbling/changes of direction to dominate the 1v1

Dribbling SSG (20 mins)

Organization:

-10-12 players

-see diagram for set-up and equipment

-area approx. 20x45 (adapt for age/ability/numbers)

4v4 small-sided game to focus on the dribbling and 1v1 worked on in the session. Teams score by dribbling the ball through an outside gate and stopping it under control.

Progressions/Variations:

-call different colour of goals to score in

-play just length or width ways

-add more balls

Coaching Points:

-lots of 1v1s

-play with head up

-decision making with/without the ball
