Rugby (20 mins)

Set Up: End zone game appropriately sized for your players

Instructions: Dribble into the endzone by dualing (take-on) defenders using 1v1 moves. You can pass but only backwards. Need ball support in areas behind and to the side. Look for opportunities to isolate defenders and encourage attackers to beat there marker.

Options: You can use handball/rugby and volleys (aussie rules) style. You can add goals to shoot and score.

Key Factors:

Expand the field.

Penetrate with purpose.

Change of speed/direction.

Charlestown Squares (20 mins)

Set Up: 3 team transition game. Be patient, as this can take a while to flow. High intensity with low rest to work ratio.

Instructions: (Red) defends in the shaded areas and sends (1) pressing defender to gain possession. (Blue) in possession (4v1) in corner square tries to release ball to (Yellow) who occupy the other 3 corners. If so, the (Yellow) team moves quickly to that square to support the ball before (Red) disposesses it. If the team loses possesion, they transition to the defending team.

Options: How can we score? Number of passes. Penetrating passes. Add 2 defenders to make it harder/easier depending on your topic.

Key Factors:

Defending - Compactness (Quick to contain ball). Pressure (Angle & speed of run).

Attacking - Angle/distance of support. Look to break the lines (of defence) with penetrating passes.

Over & Back (20 mins)

Set Up: Like 3 on 3 (Basketball). 2 or 3 teams for more rest to work ratio.

Instructions: King of the Hill. (Blue) plays to score on goal. If defending team (Red) gets possession, and gains the line, then they become the attackers and (Blue) transitions to Defending phase. If playing with 3 teams, the team whos scores, now defends and (Yellow) can restart in the attacking phase, while the team who got scored on takes an active rest by playing Tennis.

Options: Simulate a counter-attack by use mini-goals (or target players) for the defending team to score.

Key Factors:

Attacking - Expand by providing width & depth. Pentrate lines of defence. If 1v1, dual the defender using speed/direction.

Defending - Get goal-side quickly. Stay compact. Good shape. Hit the outlets quickly.
