Juggling / Pop challenge

Instructions:

1. Allow players to practice juggling.

2. Coach demonstrates which surface he/she would like the players to use (laces) and allows players to practice by bouncing the ball on the ground first and trying to pop the ball back up to his/her hands.

3. If this becomes to easy for the players then ask them to pop the ball before it touches the ground.

Progression:

(P1) - Pop Challenge: Players must pop the ball back up to their hands using their laces, and have to control the ball so that it doesn't go higher than their heads.

1. For the challenge the players must pop the ball up to their hands with his/her right foot, then catch it, afterwards pop the ball with their left foot and catch it (level 1).

2. After completing level 1, players must then pop the ball twice on each leg, catching it, and then finish by alternating the legs, so that the ball pops on the right and then the left.

3. If the ball is dropped, player starts back at level zero.

4. Players try to beat their latest level, or his/her peer's level.

Example: (Level 1) Right foot - pop - catch, Left foot - pop - catch; (Level 2) Right foot - 2x pop - catch, Left foot - 2x pop - catch, Right + Left foot - 1 pop in between each - catch; etc.

(P2) - Players are asked to place the ball between their feet and release it as they jump up and try to catch it with their hand. (Players must bring their knees forward to their chest in order to do this successfully). After a few times doing this successful, ask the players if they can try to pop it after the ball is in the air in front of them.

Free Movement

Organization:

Grid dependent on numbers

Every player with a ball

Instructions:

1. In the grid allow the players to dribble around using Messi / Ronaldo touches.

2. (Coach) Reviews Messi and Ronaldo touches and addresses when and where to use each touch.

3. Allow the players to practice.

4. After players make proper adjustments of recognizing space and difference between touches lightly introduce moves they can do on the dribble. Sequence: Shoulder drop, Scissors, Step over.

5. Allow players to practice the new move(s) introduced.

6. After practice, provide the players with a cue of when to do the move.

7. CP: (1) Messi touches prior, (2) Recognize space ahead, (3) Execution of the move, (4) Acceleration after to move, (5) Identify space on the field - Get head up.

8. Move(s) = walk through at this age.

Coaching Points:

1. Keep you head up - Look out for other players who may bump into you. Look for open space and cut away from others with the outside surface of your foot.

2. Recognize when to use Messi vs. Ronaldo touches while performing the move. (Before/After?)

3. Maintain a low center of gravity

4.Touch after recognizing there's space - needs to be explosive but controlled into space away from players reach.

Progressions:

(P1) - 5 lives; Each players has 5 lives to start of with, if they dribble out of bounds or by accidentally bumps into another player he/she loses a life. If a player gets down to zero lives left he/she must see a coach for a technical challenge that will give them an additional 5 lives. After 2 minutes see who many lives each player has left.

Car Trip

Organization:

Four corners marked out with cones as shown in diagram

Dimensions are dependent on number of players

Each player has a ball

Instructions:

1. Similar to "Free Movement with the Ball". Each player has a ball and must dribble around as they are taking a road trip from one place to another. Four Locations: The Beach, Park, Aquarium, and Mall (Toy Store).

2. Have them practice dribbling and manipulating the ball with different surfaces of the foot. Some moves are -

Look for Toys/Clothes(?) = Rollovers with the sole of the foot. (At the Mall)

Copy Cat the Penguins = box touches. (In the Aquarium)

Build Sand Castles = toe taps. (At the Beach)

     _______________ = inside/outside touches. (At the Park)

Coaching Points:

1. Keep your head up. Try not to bump into anyone. Look for space

2. Small touches

3. Use changes of speed and direction to get into open space

Progressions:

1. Use the 5x5 boxes in the corners of the field and have the players decide which box represents a particular activity. Then randomly call out which area they must dribble to and have them perform the foot skills associate with that grid.
