Description

Three Goal Game Activity

Three Goal Game is meant to be an all-encompassing activity. There are different set ups for the field with this activity which present different challenges to players however for this session and activity, we have organized the grid in the shape of a triangle with each corner representing a goal - these goals are not designated to any one team color.

The game is meant to be fast-paced and high energy, that means there is minimal coaching involved and few stoppages. When there is a stoppage it is a planned stop for rest.

Players participating in this activity will experience success based on their overall comfort with the ball. A player who is able to manipulate the ball, fight off opponents pressure and see the goal will achieve success. It is a 1v1v1 scenario where each player must battle for him / her self. A player will become automatized in his / her reaction to attack with speed, with his / her understanding of when and where to go in to regain possession of the ball. This activity promotes players ability to trouble shoot and problem solve in pressure situations. The activity is engaging, fun because of the high level of competition between players and will work on speed endurance training.

FYI: Speed endurance training (both with and without the ball) has proven to be as, if not more, effective at improving players overall endurance levels than more traditional continuous aerobic and aerobic interval training (Soccer Fitness, Bucciarelli, 2012)

Variations and progressions may be added to the activity based on players understanding and ability to carry out the task. For the first week participating in this exercise a very basic addition will be made which works on players thought process, agility, reaction time and focus.

Warm Up (10 mins)

Warm Up

Each Player Has a Ball

- Freestyle Juggling

- Specific Demand Juggling

After 5 - 10 minutes of juggling, ask players to participate in an activity that will challenge them to work on motor functions. In these activities, incorporate movements that demand players to develop ABC's (agility, balance, coordination and speed). Each warm up can be different and the coach can demand different movements. An example of an activity would be touch tag in a small space, this can be done without the ball and the progression can be to include the ball with the challenge set as holding the ball with the comfortable arm, least comfortable arm, then both. From here, be creative with the different means by which you challenge players to use their agility, balance, coordination and speed.

Field Set-Up

4 v 4

keep game stoppages to a minimum, if a player continues to make an error over and over, after attempting to correct the issue during play, you may then bring the player aside once he / she has made the mistake again to discuss, make sure to use detailed and specific examples, sandwich the information with something positive he or she has done then, provide feedback on the point you would like to make (for ex. Coach to Player: "I liked that you had the ball at your feet, next time I would like to see you take the space in front of you by dribbling forward that way your team can advance up on the field more without losing possession of the ball).

Coach positioning and movement during player as much as possible by speaking with the player off the ball. Coach decision-making when the play has broken down, often times this is best done for the group, stop the play, re-create the situation as accurately as possible and speak loud and clear for all players to hear.

When a player is in possession of the ball, we always want him / her to have wide and deep options, use the words left, right and far for ease of understanding to players 9 and younger.
