Passing practice (10 mins)

What

Defending - Today we will learn how to defend in a 1v1 situation

When

An attacking player has the ball

Why

To deny space and time

Prevent goal scoring opportunities

Win the ball

Set Up

Create a field 20x30 metres in size.

How to Play

Players pass and move freely in the area - players receiving to take first touch into space.

Progressions

1) Passing player to add passive pressure to receiver.

2) Passing player arcs run to force receiving player one way (still passive)

3) Passing player can try to win the ball before recieving player takes two touches (if not, relieve pressure)

Player Tasks

Can you apply quick pressure?

Can you force player one way by the way you approach?

Skill Acquisition 1 (20 mins)

Set Up

Create 7x12 metre boxes so you have for 2 per area with a small goal at either end.

How to Play (diagram A)

- Play starts with a pass from one player to the other.

- Attacking player attempts to score by passing/dribbling through small goal.

- Defender attempts to win ball and score by passing/dribbling through either goal.

How to Play (diagram B)

- Player 1 plays to player 2 who plays to player 3. As soon as player 2 takes a touch, player 1 can begin to pressure the ball into player 3.

- Player 3 attempts to score in one of the three goals (1 point for wide goals, 2 points for middle goal).

- Player 1 defends. If Player 1 wins ball, either pass to Player 2 or pass/dribble through end goal.

Player Tasks

1) Can you apply pressure quickly?

2) Can you approach attacker to force him one way? Narrow side/weaker foot/away from goal/backwards.

3) As attacker dribbles, can you adopt a position where you are:

- low

- side on

- can see the ball

4) Can you win the ball?

- jab with front foot (but don't commit unless absolutely certain you can win)

- force player out of the field

- interception

- use body to get in front (cut across attackers path if he attempts to dribble past)

Progression (diagram 2)

- Player 3 can use player 2 but Player 2 is on 1 touch

Skill Acquisition 2 (20 mins)

Set Up

Create a field 25x18 metres in size with a big goal at one end and three gates at the other. Make sure server has plenty of balls available.

How to Play

Both teams play possession with the blues scoring through the gates (Player 1 can only score in gate 1 and so on) and red scoring in the goal.

- Red defenders are responsible for protecting their own gate.

- Blues defenders are responsible for protecting the big goal.

Progressions

- Blue players can use server to bounce ball off (server on 1 touch)

- Red can use server to play back to (server on 1 touch)

- Blue can go through any gate - defenders to protect their own gate whilst being aware of their player

- Can only dribble through the gate

- Play the same game using normal football rules - anyone can defend player on the ball.

Player Tasks

Can defenders pressure the ball quickly but not dive in?

Can you show them away from your gate?

Can you force play backwards?

Can covering defenders get in a position to support 1st defender?

Can you look for defending opportunities to out-number attackers?

Small Sided Game (15 mins)

Set Up

A grid of 40m x 25m divided in 2 grids of 20m x 25m by

a halfway line of 4 poles. Two small goals on each byline and a

7m shooting line at each end.

How to Play

Two teams of 4 players each. The game starts in grid A with the orange team in

possession and one yellow defender (4 v 1). The 3 other yellow players position

themselves as shown (one between the goals and the other 2 at the shooting line

cones).

The blue team must get a player running with the ball across the halfway line

into grid B and score in one of the goals (inside the scoring zone).

At the moment the blue player crosses the halfway line one of the red players

enters the grid to attack the blue player (1 v 1).

Which defender commits depends on the ‘gate’ through which the attacker enters

grid B (see diagram).

• If blue scores: restart in grid A

• If the red defender captures the ball in grid B: restart in grid B with red in

possession

• If the defender wins the ball in the 4 v 1, they can score immediately in

1 of the 2 goals (from any distance)

4v4 with normal football rules applied (except no corners - ball starts with GK whose ball it would have been)

Player Tasks

Deny space and time

Prevent goal scoring opportunities

Win the ball
