Legend

Black dotted line: pass

Solid red line: player movement without ball

Solid grey line: player movement with ball (dribbling)

Example 1 (WRONG)

A straight run by the forward causes 3 problems...

1) Being too direct, too quickly will lead to the forward being in an offside position

2) The straight run leaves very little space for the midfielder to play a through ball between defenders

3) The straight run leaves no space for the midfielder to play a ball to the forward's feet

Example 2 (CORRECT)

The curved run in this example shows that the opponent (defender) follows the forward's run, which leaves a much bigger space for the midfielder to exploit with a through ball. It also prevents the forward from getting behind them too quickly and being called offside.

Example 2 (CORRECT)

The curved run in this example shows that the opponent (defender) stays in position, which allows a much bigger space for the midfielder to exploit by passing to the forward's feet, but far enough away from the defender so it won't be intercepted.
