Agility Reaction (10 mins)

Warm-up -- Agility Reaction:

Divide players into equal groups of 3-5 and start each group in a single-file line on a cone about 10-15 yards from large number of small cones spread out on floor. Use odd number of cones, more than enough so each players gets multiple turns to go.

On coach's command, players take turns sprinting to cones and retrieving a cone to bring back to group. When they return, the next player goes. Players go until all the cones are retrieved and the group with the most cones at the end wins. Losing groups perform burpees, knee jumps, mountain-climbs, etc.

Vary starting positions. Start players seated, on belly, on back, use hands or no hands, front roll to start, throw ball in air, roll and retrieve, dribble left, dribble right.

Duration: 10 minutes.

Turning Pass & Receive (20 mins)

Turning Pass & Receive:

Four cones, four players, one ball

Cones about 15 yards apart

Player A starts play with pass to Player B. Player B works a turn and returns pass to Player A, who then passes to Player C, who works a turn and returns pass to Player A. Player A then passes to Player D. Player D passes to Player B, who works turn and returns pass to Player D. Players D plays to Player C, who works turn and passes back. Player D plays to Player A.

Switch positions from sides to ends.

Introduce shoulder check before turning.

Have players communicate where they want the ball played to.

Receiving player should move away then come back to receive pass and time movement so they aren't waiting for ball. Receive on back foot.

Final player at end can play one touch to far end if possible.

Duration: 20 minutes.

Diamond Passing (20 mins)

Diamond Passing:

Four cones in a diamond shape with end cones about 30 yards apart and side cones halfway between spaced about 20 yards apart. At least five players, with multiple players starting behind ball first. Ball starts at one end of diamond (Player A).

Player A makes pass to Player B and makes overlapping run and receives return pass from B before passing to Player C (then joins line behind Player C). Player C passes to and overlaps Player D and passes to Player A (then joins line behind Player A). Player B and D should go long and come short, receiving on back foot, then playing return ball into space for Player A and C to run onto. Switch side players.

Progression 2:

Player B plays across to Player D after receiving ball from Player A and Player D plays a diagonal ball for Player A to run onto. Variations can include lofted pass from Player D to Player A, can add goals at end to finish with strike at goal instead of playing directly to Player C (keep supply of balls at ends if this progression is used).

Duration: 20 minutes.

Channel Game (30 mins)

Channel Game:

30 x 40 grid (vary size depending on age and number of players) with cones marking off two channels or lanes down the side of the grid. Two teams and one ball and two wide players in the channels at the side of the grid who play for both teams.

4 v 4 play with the team needing to pass the ball to a play in one of the channels before they can score. The channel players must play the ball back to the same team they receive it from, but they can run the channel and dribble and cannot be tackled.

A goal scored directly from a cross counts as two.

Play to set score or time limit. Switch players in channel.

Channel players can play to each other. All restarts begin from channel player sending ball to receiving team.

Duration: 25 minutes.

Football/Soccer Session Plan Drill (Colour): Power & Finesse

Power & Finesse (15 mins)

Power & Finesse:

Place two cones outside of D in front of goal. Form two shooting lines with players. Lines alternate shooters with player shooting twice. Coach with supply of balls is positioned on end line to side of goal and goalkeeper. Coach supplies pass to waiting receiver.

First shot is for power. First touch must be positive, head goes down to receive ball with inside of foot and comes back up again to look at 'keeper, then down again to strike ball with laces on second touch. Shot must come before ball crosses top of penalty area from first touch. Player then immediately runs into box for side-footed finesse shot off first touch.

If player scores either shot, they return to line. If they score none, they sit out and can only be brought back in if a teammate scores twice. If no players are waiting to re-enter and player scores twice, the other team's next shooter must score both shots or is out. If player's first touch on power shot causes them to kill ball or back up to strike or cross into penalty area, the attempt doesn't count. If ball comes outside of penalty area on finesse shot, it doesn't count. No rebounds. First team to eliminate all of the other team's players wins.

Focus on technique and proper ball striking -- use of arms for balance, follow-through, contact centre of ball, knee and head over ball, locked ankle.

Duration: 15 minutes.
