Free Play (10 mins)

Free Play

Warm up playing with size 1 ball to mini-goals in a 20x25 grid.

Encourage creativity on the ball.

2 touch minimum.

Ball must stay below waist.

Players complete movements down to far cone and back.

Movements:

Open Gates

Close Gates

Forward Lung and twist over bent knee.

Functional Receiving (20 mins)

Turning While Receiving

180 degree turns progressing to 90 degree turns.

Set up: Distance of 15 yards between cones or greater depending on ability and level of fitness you are working on.

180 turns: Ball is played from one side of grid to player checking to middle of grid. Player receiving pass using back foot to turn and play the ball back to the line the player checked from. Player returns to line they checked to the ball from.

90 turns: Shift players to all 4 cones. Same pattern of checking and returning to line. However pass is played to a cone using a 90 degree turn instead of a 180 degree turn.

Coaching points:

Check hard to ball, game speed.

First touch in receiving, receive like your foot is a pillow.

First touch in the dircetion you are going to be playing the pass. Pass to yourself.

Use back foot to receive, opening hips to play.

Heel down, toe up, proper angle of foot

3v3 Pursuit (20 mins)

This is a rondo with 3v3 in the middle of the grid and 4 neutrals on the outside.

Assign permanent marks between the Red and Yellow teams (same players always mark each other)

Play begins with Red in possession, but ball outside with a neutral.

Game is a pure rondo but emphasis is on players in possession losing their specific mark (dismarking).

If Yellow wins the ball at any point, they are immediately in possession and roles switch (same pairs of attacker/defender).

Coaching points:

-Quick, decisive movements

-If ball is not played, player should vacate and leave space for a teammate

-Defenders should maintain visual contact with the ball and their mark to be aware of the rotations and any opportunities to intercept

Progressions:

-Limit touches of outside/inside players

-Provide points for pass counts

-Play only in one dimension at a time (vertical or horizontal)

Bring in Wide Players (25 mins)

Bring in Wide Players

Objective: Bring in Wide Players to create numbers up before going to goal.

4v4 or like number begins in the center of the grid. Team may go to goal or play ball to wide player. Once wide player receives pass, he/she enters the field to create a numbers up situation.

Goals scored by shooting into net (2 points) or dribbling into corners (1 point).

Once a goal is scored, reset back to 4v4 in grid.

Progression: Begin scoring on either side. Progress to scoring in only 1 direction.

Progression: Play to goals, no outside neutrals.

Coaching points:

Be patient in possession, bring teammates into the play, don't rush.

Find the passing lanes/through balls.

Know when to create numbers up, relieve pressure by switching fields, decision making while on ball.

Communication while in possession and while defending.

Overal technique: Receiving, turning, passing.
