Description

Specialized Training is a program designed for boys and girls born in 2004, 2003, and 2002. The program is designed to infuse players with creativity in the game through developing the technique and skill that gives players the confidence and comfort on the ball to manipulate it in match situations that require quick decision-making and the skill to carry out those decisions.

Movement Against Oponents (15 mins)

Set Up:

Players are working in a grids 8-10 x 8-10. Increase the size of the grid for the 1st group as they will need the extra space to be successful.

How it Works:

In groups of 3 (if there is a group of 4 then just put a server on each end), server and an attacker are trying to complete as many hand passes as possible (if ball hits the ground then it doesn't count). Players should be using fakes to get away from the defender but must remain in the grid. Look at left grid in picture above.

Players will work for 30-40s, then rest for 30-40s. Then server will come in and one player will go out to serve and this will continue until everyone has gone.

After 1 round through, coach should explain and demonstrate ways to get away from defenders and use examples of what they saw in the 1st round that can be corrected.

Players will complete a 2nd round against different defenders.

Progression:

Same sequence but now the ball is played on the ground. For the 1st group, you can limit the defender to be able to intercept the ball but cannot steal the ball from the attacker once they receive it. The attacker can play on 1 touch or 2 touch, whichever best suits the group.

Key:

1. Chage of pace/change of direction

2. Read the defender and adjust based on their reactions.

3. Keep your eye on ball and defender.

4. Server plays the far foot.

Turning Skill and Spacial Awareness (30 mins)

Setup:

In groups of 4, 2 players are in middle and 2 players are on ends with a ball each. Players on end are about 20 yards apart.

How It Works:

Players from middle receive from server and complete a turn then play to other side. Players on inside will then go back and receive the ball from same server again, completing the same turn. Players on inside will always receive from one side, then pass to the other. In picture above, you can see top middle player has already done his turn and ready to making final pass, while 2nd middle player is about to perform his turn.

Turns:

A. Inside Turn (pulling ball with inside of toes) and players should pass it with same foot they received with. When the player finishes the turn, it should make a L shape (from where pass came from to the end point of the turn).

B. Midfield Turn (using the same inside toe part as an inside turn), the player now receives with for e.g. left foot and turns over their right shoulder. It is very important that players make sure their first step after touching the ball is in the direction they are turning. Some players will turn the ball but still be facing the original direction which would have them lose the ball in a game situation.

C. Receive Back to Goal and then step out/drop shoulder to the side the ball is on and then turn wide with inside of foot of faking leg (if ball is on left side of attacker then defender will already be on that side of the player)

Keys:

1. Change of pace to receive ball

2. Believe in your skill (if a player is unsure whether their turn will work then they generally leave the ball exposed).

3. Turn with the ball, reduce as much separation as possible.

Progression 1:

After practicing each turn. Servers now have a red and yellow cone (one cone per hand) and hold up a colour when players in the middle approach them. Players in middle check shoulder right before pass is made to them and call out colour.

Keys:

1. Check shoulder as the server is about to hit the ball

2. Same as above.

1 v 1 Turning to Make A Pass (20 mins)

Setup:

In groups of 5 (separate 2 groups of 5). A coach will need to be a server.

20 x 20 grid. Servers on each corner with a ball and extras. Goals 2 yards wide and on both sides of grid. The remaining players are behind each goal.

How it Works:

One player is an attacker and the other is a defender in the middle. The attacker can receive from either server (in picture player ran toward the coach server but then changed direction to receive from the other side). The attacker can pass in either goal. If the attacker scores they go in the back of the line and a new player comes out (can alternate sides) to attack against the same defender. The defender only leaves their role if they stop the attacker from scoring. If the attacker doesn't score then that player becomes the defender; and the original defender joins the attacking line.

Play for 3-5 minutes. Change servers after each break.

Keys:

1. Change of pace to receive ball

2. Read the defender and adjust based on their reactions. Keep your eye on ball and defender.

3. Check shoulder as the server is about to hit the ball

4. Turn with the ball, reduce as much separation as possible
