Stage 1 (15 mins)

Organization:

10x20 yard area (grid)

Groups of 6 players

Cones / Flags / Markers / Poles (4 different objects matched on each corner)

Instructions:

- First Player in the groups move around the three cones; on coaches command, it's a race to one of the four corners (which ever coach calls out).

- Point to the team of the quicker player.

Coaching Points:

- Head Up

- Quick feet

- Low center of gravity

- Explosive movement to flag or cone that is called

- Quick thinking/decision making

Progressions:

- Opposite of what coach calls (if flag, go to cone and vice versa)

- Vary the movement around the three cones

- Add a pass from the next person in line waiting, and person whose turn it is has to dribble while executing sequence

Stage 1 Variation (5 mins)

Organization:

10x15 yard area

2 teams (add grids if lines too long)

Instructions:

- Team on Attack must lose their Shadow and cross either end of the channel before their Shadow.

- If Attacker crosses before the Shadow they win the point.

- If Shadow crosses the line at the same time as the Attacker, Shadow wins the point.

Coaching Points:

- Attack space at speed

- Recognition of defender's position

- Read movement of the defender (In front, next to or behind)

- On toes to pivot

- Open hips/close hips to fake defender

- Head up to see where space is available

- Accelerate into space

Instructions:

- Same game, but now played with a ball for both players.

Coaching Points:

- Attack space at speed

- Recognition of defender's position

- Read movement of the defender (In front, next to or behind)

- On toes to pivot

- Open hips/close hips to fake defender

- Head up to see where space is available

- Seal defender off after executing move

- Accelerate into space

Organization:

10x15 yard area

2 teams of 6 (add more grids if needed)

Instructions:

- First player in group dribbles out and determines when to execute move (Cruyff turn and U-turn combo). Player will finish at other end.

- Second (and subsequent) player goes when first player makes eye contact after executing first (Cruyff) turn.

Coaching Points:

- Attack space at speed

- Recognition of defender's position

- Read movement of the defender (In front, next to or behind)

- On toes to pivot

- Open hips/close hips to fake defender

- Head up to see where space is available

- Seal defender off after executing move

- Accelerate into space

Progressions:

- Can use time to also work on corresponding Stop/Start (High-Wave = Cruyff; Stop-tap = U-turn)

Stage 2 SSA (20 mins)

Stage 2 (20 min)

Organization:

10x15 yard area

2 groups running at the same time. 3 Players on each side (Attackers & Defenders)

Instructions:

- Defender plays ball square to Attacker.

- Defender cannot go to defend until Attacker takes 1st touch.

- Attacker must try to score in either goal.

- If Defender wins the ball, they can score in either goal.

- Next Defender in line must count down from 10 seconds (each game is 10 seconds long).

Coaching Points:

- Space ahead so attacker is at speed

- Recognition of defender's posistion

- Behind you - accelerate forward

- Alongside you (Space ahead) - Pretend to turn keep going forward

- Alongside you (Space behind) - Turn

- Defender ahead of you - Turn

- Once you get a yard of space then look to cut across defender

Organization:

- 20x30 yard area

- 2 teams of 4 plus GKs

Instructions:

- Players play 4v4 with lined zone area.

- Attacking players can turn within zoned area to attack either goal.

- After goal scored, scoring team retains possession and begins to attack opposite goal.

Coaching Points:

- Awareness of when to turn from area of more pressure to area of less.

- Head up and eye contact with players.

- Bigger touch on execution of turn.

- Exaggeration of movements for pass/shot to sell the turn.

- After execution of turn, pick up head to observe.

- Acceleration after turn into space.
