ball mastery (30 mins)

Session Objective: To improve ball mastery

Organisation:

Tapping

Ball each.Encourage players to stop ball as moving around by tapping on top of ball.Then a variety of secondary movements can be added on .

For example : stop one foot move (tap) move with other. Tapone foot step over move other.Tap move twice one foot.Tap move twice one,ta[p again twice other and so on.variety.

Turns : Cruyff turn from last session:4 parts:point your toe,down below,bend your knees and out you go (use second foot to drive ball out and away).

Stop turn. Stop (tap)Over ball ,plant to shield and away with other foot.

Extend this in pairs and upon receipt ball out to side,execute turns etc for reinforcement.

Key Factors:

Quality of first touch and control.Speed between tapping and movement.

Quality of movement rather than speed.

Quality of pass - weight and timing.

Warm up (10 mins)

Session Objective: Receiving and turning

Organisation: 9 v 3 (vary numbers according to number of players but 3:1ratio in favour of outside players).

Extensions: development into multiple passing routines.Examples shown but list is endless and allows coach to create.

Players receive ball and then move out to side and execute turns groupoo have been working on.Variations and combinations endless.Vary turns ,add in stepovers,other change of direction etc.

Movement to receive,Body shape,quality of pass. Awareness/Head up

passing and forward runs (25 mins)

Session Objective:Warm up to improve passing and forward runs

Organisation:

Two mannikins.Players arranged as shown.To begin each drill with ball at one end to get shape and then ball at each end starting at same time.

(1) Ball played to player A from 1 who receives and returns.A opens up and receives ball back from 1 to take on back foot and play to end D.A joins D and D plays E to repeat down other side and so on.

(2)Ball played from 2 to player B who plays return to 2.B then spins past mannikin.2 plays diagonal pass to straight run of B.

(3)Ball played from 3 to C who plays return to 3.C spins round mannikin but makes diagonal run to receive straight pass from C.

Repeat drills both sides so players use left and right feet to receive.

Movement at mannikin to create space.

Body shape to receive.

Movement in advance of pass.Quality of touch.

Small-sided games (25 mins)

Objective: To encourage turning wherever possible.

Practice organisation

Pitch 60 by 40.

2 appropriate sized goals.Balls by side of goals.

Game starts by goalkeeper feeding .

Free play,but players encouraged to turn either to beat player or to retain ball.Stopping only to highlight giood examples or situations when turning is an option.
