Defending Unopposed (10 mins)

Defending Unopposed

2 x 12 by 12 yard boxes, 1 football, up to 16 players, attackers and defenders.

This is a classic FA Level 2 Technique Practice. The aim of this drill is to get players used to the technique of defending - side on, on their toes, body weight on the front foot, eyes on the ball.

The drill will start with the 2 defenders (blue) defending against the 2 attackers (red). Blue's will start with the ball and pass it to a red, once the ball goes across to the other red, the defender who is closest to the player will apply pressure. The blue is looking to get no closer than an arms length. The other blue player will be in a covering position (just behind the blue player pressurizing and opposite the other attacker).

The red player who receives the ball from their team mate justs controls the ball for the time being so the blues can get into their position.

This exercise will be repeated for 5 minutes and then the attackers will swap with the defenders.

Defending Opposed (20 mins)

Defending Opposed

2 x 12 by 12 yard boxes, 1 football, up to 16 players, attackers and defenders.

Moving on from the last drill, this one gives the players a more realistic experience of defending. The red's here will be looking to get to the end line (shaded area) and the blue's will be looking to prevent them doing so.

With the added pressure, the blue's are looking to restrict space and try and pressurize the attackers so they make a mistake giving a chance to win the ball. Because the attackers are moving at speed and the drill being more game related, the coaching points are:

- Be patient

- Show red's down the line/into tight spaces

- Stay side on

- Communicate

- Pressure/cover.

Play for 10 minutes then swap roles.

If the attackers are getting passed the defenders make the area smaller, swap defenders and attackers. If the defenders are finding it easy, make the area bigger.
