The first drill during the training session is "Throw to pass head to score".The conditions are,8 players on each team ,no goal keeepers .The equipment used is ,4 footballs ,16 bibs (8 red,8 blue) 2 goals ,cones to mark out the pitch the size of which should be gauged by the coach.

.One team in red bibs are attacking one goal and the other team ,in blue bibs are attacking the other goal. The players can not run with the ball in their hands they can only throw it,however they can run without the ball in their hands. The match duration is 15 minutes but if a team got to score 5 goals then you could reset the score and start again. The play is started by two opposing players competing for a ball thrown high in the air by the coach in the center of the pitch,,which ever player catches it means his team is in possesion of the ball.A goal is scored by a player throwing the ball to a player on his team who then headers the ball into the goals. If a player holds the ball for longer than three seconds then the other team will gain possession of the ball.If the ball goes out for a throw in then the team that last touched the ball will lose possession of it and the game is restarted with a throw in.Corners were restarted with a throw in from the four corners of the pitch.Players are not allowed to take the ball out of the other players hands they can only block the ball with their arms, but if the ball is spilled onto the floor they can pick it up and gain possession of the ball.

The only progression we did for this drill was allowing players to volley aswell as header for a goal.

The idea of this drill was to encourage support play, practice headers and volleys and give the players a good warm up at the start of the session.

The next drill is "Three games in one".The conditions of the game are 6v6,but this is left up to the coach to decide as is the pitch size,2 goal keepers The equipment used was 8 cones ,10 bibs (5 red 5 blue),3 footballs. If a small pitch is to be marked out then cones will be required,2 goals.

The team in red are playing in one direction and the team in blue are playing in the other.8 cones are set up in the positions as shown. This is basically a small sided game with a twist due to the points scoring system which is ,3 points if a player dribbles through the cones in their attacking half of the pitch and crosses the ball ,2 points if a team completes 10 consecutive passses and 1 point if a goal is scored. The match duration was 15 minutes but you could zero the scores when one side gets to 10.The game rules are that of a normal football match with throw ins ,goal kicks etc.

The progression that can be used in this drill is a change in the points scoring system to encourage different aspects of the game ie you could increase the points for 10 consecutive passes to encourage a team to keep possession of the ball and decrease points for the other skills accordingly. This drill encourages quick thinking as the players quickly worked out there were a few different ways to score points as apposed to the usual scoring of a goal.

The next drill is "Pass and shoot".The conditions of the game are 5v5 with two goalkeepers with the pitch set up as shown,The equipment used was 4 cones 8 bibs {4 blue 4 red),8 footballs,if a small pitch is to be marked out then cones will be needed,2 goals.

Each team has three players inside its own half and one forward inside the opponent's half.To start ,the red team's goalkeeper passes into the the pitch. The three red players combine to get past the blue forward and into space to shoot at goal. The blue defenders then try to block shots at goal ,while the red forward must follow up on the shot and try to capitalise on any rebounds.

The game was played for 12 minutes with the teams rotating their forward after each three minute period.all players must stay in their half of the field.Only forwards are allowed into the goalkeeper's end zone to score from rebounds. If the ball leaves play, then you nominate one of the goalkeepers to restart the game.

The only progression we did was limiting the number of touches each player could have.

This game enables players to feel comfortable shooting at goal more often and encourages the players to use quick passes to create the time and space to shoot at goal..A good idea for this drill to work well was to have a few helpers behind each goal to stop the footballs due to the large ammount of shooting that takes place during this drill.

For the remainig 15 minutes of the training session we did a normal game to finish.

An overview of the session

The session went well ,with plenty of things for the lads to think about. All the drills were small sided games with a twist to try to encourage different skills. The only real changes i made during the drills was my positioning whilst observing them ,mainly on the last drill so i could help retrieve the balls.Overall,,i enjoyed the session and i feel it worked the lads both physically and mentally.
