Hockey Session (Senior): Unit play down the channles

Essence: Building up unit play from midfield to a goal scoring opportunity

Structure:  

- Set up mini goals at the beginning of the channel

- A passes to B and B drives at the defender and teammate. What this does is force the defender to engage and thus it creates space for the pass to either teammates.

- The goal is to build up play with passes, therefore its important that A gets ahead and becomes another passing option but also that players C and D get high and wide.

- Start the drill at either the left or right hand side and work through sets of 3 times each before giving a break and asking what unit play is and what they can do to improve

Technical pointers:

- Make sure to drive at the opponent to engage him and create space

- Make overlapping runs if you are player A

- Make sure you get in an attacking position and if a rebound is played you are low and ready to react

- For the defenders, make sure you stick closely to your man, he cannot get further than 3 yards away.

 - Stay low and mobile when attempting to tackle

Variations:

- You can put in extra players in the middle channel so a 4v4 for example and emphasise the getting ahead aspect and how movement is key to creating space and goal scoring opportunities.
