Warm-ups (10 mins)

Maximum 10 minutes

Set-up - 30x30 square

General warm-up including:

Jogging

Side steps/ jockey's

Skips

Back Peddaling

Progress into dynamic stretching:

Kick to side

kick straight up

walking lunges

groin stretches - over gate etc..

Add coloured cones to 4 corners

4 Instructions:

SET - players drop immediately into set position

Right - player hops up to land/balance on right leg only

Left - as above but land/balance on left leg

Colour - call 1 of 4 colours for players to sprint to.

Maximum 10 minutes

Ball work (10 mins)

Ball work warm up

Working in 30x30 square again

Introduce 1 ball per 4 players

Players move around in square passing/receiving ball using 2 touches

Moving once pass has been made to find another ball

Progress to players with ball in hand, throwing for a vollley half volley. Focus on volley and catching technique, once you've served/caught pass the ball to another player then look to find ball for volley. Constantly switching roles.

Handling/Footwork (10 mins)

Footwork/Handling

Set- up

4/6 yard goal depending on ages

players in groups of 3

1 in goal, 2 standing paralllel to the inside of each post with a ball each

Goalkeeper moves out to one server (into line - up line)

Server starts with an under-arm throw into head to bring out 'W' Technique

-hands move straight up to ball & thumnbs come together

-keep eyes on ball with head in behind ball (2nd barrier)

-remain in set position whilst making catching whilst keeping balance (knees bent, on balls of feet, nose over toes)

10 serves per keeper

Work down into Cup Technique

Server now throws ball underarm into stomach

- Hands straight out towards ball, little fingers touching

- guide ball into stomach but don't pull in

- head/chest over the ball to make it secure

- balls of feet, knees bent, don't jump back as ball comes in

Underarm roll along floor for Scoop Technique

- hands straight down to ball, little fingers touching

- leg or legs behind ball to create 2nd barrier

- teach all 4 barriers if possible (feet/legs together bend to scoop ball, K Barrier, Long Barrier, Scoop into drop on top of ball)

Progress into deliveries where ball is chest pass/bounced into goalkeeper working all 3 techniques - 10 per keeper.

Handling/Footwork (15 mins)

Handling/Footwork

Split keepers into groups of 5

Goalkeepers take it in turns to move through cones using - Single feet, double feet, bunny hops, double feet laterals, slalom through cones using side steps

Encourge keeping hands set and remaining on balls of feet

Goalkeeper moves through, makes a save using W, Cup and Scoop then becomes server with server moving to back of line.

set-up

4-6 yard goal depending on age

Goalkeepers set 10-15 yards apart

Goalkeepers take it in turn to either volley or strike ball off floor at opposing goalkeeper aiming to get within 1 yard either side of goalkeeper.

Working high, mid and low the focus is on the goalkeepers footwork to get 2nd barrier in and handling as well as their kicking accuracy.

work for approx. 10-15 minutes.

Set-up

Set up a 5x15 box approx 15 yards away from the goal

Work in groups of 4/5 with 1 player in goal

Numer players from 1-3/4 and instruct to dribble around in the box

Coach calls number, player takes a touch and strikes ball towards goalkeeper (aiming to get within 1 yard either side of the goalkeeper)

Goalkeeper makes relevant save, ensure they are balanced and have moved into line of ball.

Goalkeeper makes 2 saves from each striker then switch.

work 2 rotations of each goalkeeper

Diving (15 mins)

Afternoon Session

Begin with 10 minutes of athletic development - Agility, Balance, Coordination, Speed work using ladders, cones hurdles etc..

Diving - Technique

Set-up 2 balls approx 2-2.5 steps apart

Goalkeepers facing each other

Collapsing dive

Goalkeepers work in sync to work on collapsing dive technique, diving to opposite ball to partner each time

Start in SET position, leg nearest to ball moves in towards other leg or sweeps in behind, hands drop down together (handcuffs), moving into W shape with hand closest to the ball dropping in behind and other hand dropping on top of ball to secure it. Head in behind with eyes on ball and elbow out from underneath the body by pushing hands out/towards the ball during the process of the dive.

KNEE, HIP, SHOULDER for more comfortable dive

Complete 10-12 times on each side then progress to Low Diving Save

Set-up as above but now move the balls to 4-5 steps

Goalkeepers again work towards opposite balls. This time taking a slight diagonal step out and towards the ball with the nearest foot (toes pointing towards direction of the ball), moving hands across in Handcuffs, down and towards the ball (ensuring elbow is out and hands drop down to floor before body/imagine sliding hands along floor). Make sure the dive is forwards to narrow the angle.

KNEE, HIP, SHOULDER for more comfortable dive

10-12 dives each side

Mid Height Dive

Set-up

1 player with ball in hand (either kneeling or standing) standing around 1 step away from partner

Partner takes step out and towards ball (as with low diving save), hands presented in W shape, take ball out of partners hands and guide ball to floor (knee, hip shoulder) ensuring not to slam ball on to floor.

10-12 saves in total then switch.

If a GK isn't quite perfecting the technique regress to starting goalkeeper on knees, taking step towards or away with knees, ensuring correct hand/body shape and diving out towards the ball.
