Warm-up/ Athletyic Development (20 mins)

Warm-up

30x30 square

General movements and dynamic stretches as previous day.

Progress into laying small gates down around the square and organise the players into pairs. Number players 1&2. Player 1 begins by attempting to run through as many gates as possible before being caught by 2. Work for 30s then switch to 2 being chased. Once caught the player caught must balance on 1 leg for 5seconds then continue.

Finish off with players in pairs dribbling around square and passing to each other through as many gates as possible within 1 minute. Rest and repeat one more time.

One on Ones (20 mins)

Set-Up

10x5 corridors set up for keepers to work in pairs.

Players take it in turns to dribble towards each other attempting to get past the end line.

To begin, start with attacking player with balll taking heavy touch for goalkeeper to come out and claim along the floor, with attacking player applying light pressure. Switch roles after every turn. Work 10-12 turns each to ensure players are comfortable.

As goalkeeper approaches the ball they should start to lower themselves and drop hands towards ankles, palms facing forwards. Drop down to side the ball is on, ensuring keeper doesn't run around the ball to dive on it (keep body between ball and goal). Keeper can use technique similar to collapsing dive or low diving save. For safety ensure goalkeeper keeps head tucked in and behind the ball.

Progression

Attacking player now attempts to dribble ball past goalkeeper past end line.

As attacking player sets off the goalkeeper edges out getting lower as they get closer. If attacker takes a larger touch the goalkeeper closes the distance quicker. If attacker takes ball to side, goalkeeper adopts more of a jockeying stance, keeping low and holding up player, only diving in if given the opportunity.

progression

Now give the attacking player only 5 seconds to get past goalkeeper to end line. Turn into competition between the pair to see who stops other the most times.

Maximum 30 minutes all in.

Progression 1v2

20x5 channel now

2 attacking players attempt to play past goalkeeper. Goalkeeper attempts to close down correctly to cut off angle for pass and also to manufacture opportunity to secure the ball using the above techniques

15 minutes.

One on Ones (20 mins)

Dealing with an early shot.

Work in groups of 3/4 working from central and wide areas.

30 yards long, 20 yards wide with a 4-6 yard goal.

Work on goalkeepers start position in relation to the ball. Not too far forwards or back, scenario of playing ball through into final 3rd so goalkeeper should be between 3-6yards.

Goalkeeper 1st assesses through ball, can the close distance before attacker reaches ball? should they hold position and react to attackers 1st touch? Can they come out and claim ball before attacker gets there?

If striker takes a big touch move out directly to the ball, slowing as attacker gets there, getting lower and lower the closer they get to the ball. Can they set to make a save (either diving or just using handling techniques)? Do they need to make a block, teach splits technique.

Allow a lot of free play and for both attackers (try to encourage an early shot) and goalkeepers to make their own decisions.

Progress into allowing attacker to take on goalkeeper with the introduction of a defending player (the player who originally played the ball in). Now we look at the goalkeepers hold up play, to allow defender to recover position.

Maximum 30 minutes.

One on One/Footwork (20 mins)

Work in groups of 8-10

2 goalkeepers in centre.

Players on outside work on 2 touches and players in middle attempt to intercept ball by using either blocking technique or by closing down and diving on ball. If pass is intercepted player who played pass.

Dealing with cut backs (20 mins)

Warm-up

Begin with atheltic development - hurdles, cones, footwork etc..

Maximum 10 minutes

Dealing with cut backs

Start with just one pole or cone - goalkeeper standing with heels in line at least 1 arms length away (lets adopt a more positive position based on %)

Server plays a side foot pass (cut back) in and around the 6 yard box (place cone as guidance)

Goalkeeper uses correct technique to gather the ball - collapsing dive, low diving save, scoop technique.

15 deliveries either side

Now progress to server starting higher up the line, moving ball towards byline and cutting back. focus on goalkeepers start position (angles) and movement to assume correct position to deal with cut back.

15 deliveries on either side.

Dealing with Cut Backs/ Reaction Saves (20 mins)

Set up

4-6 yard goal

groups of 3/4

Start with ball 20-25 yards out with player playing ball out wide for wide player to run on to. Ball is cut back across box where central player will be running in.

Goalkeeper starts central and moves around to deal with cut back. Goalkeeper must assess distance of cut back and decide whether to attack the ball or spin in to defend goal (reaction save)

Look at movement of goalkeeper to first of all defend cut back then movement to defend goal if turning in to attempt to make a save. Also assess goalkeepers decision making in either attempting to cut out the cut back or decision making in attempting to make a save if defending goal.

Constanly roate players so that player pulling ball back goes in goal, goalkeeper becomes central player, central player moves out wide.

If working with 4 players add a 2nd striker or use as a defending player

work for 15-20 minutes

Dealing with High Balls (20 mins)

Goalkeeper works in a 4-6 yard goal

Server throws underarm into central area for goalkeeper to come out and claim.

Allow server to work up and down a 20 yard line, changing the angle and flight of the delivery as much as possible.

Work 15 serves each side per goalkeeper.

Look at goalkeepers decision making (work on ASSESS - DECIDE - REACT), approach to the ball, take off leg and handling.

ASSESS - Assess the flight of the ball (height, speed, distance from goal)

DECIDE - How are you going to get there, how quickly, when to go etc..

REACT - Move to ball and take in 1 fluid motion

Ensure goalkeeper doesn't move too early as to get caught underneath the ball, alternatively, ensure goalkeeper doesn't move too late as to not manage to get there.

The jump must be timed so that they are taking the ball at THEIR HIGHEST, SAFEST POINT and not on the way up or down.

Knee up to protect from oncoming traffic and make sure they jump off the leg closest to the goal.

Progress to adding in an attacker and defender to see how goalkeeper reacts.

Finish day with end game of Hand Ball where ball can be rolled along floor, thrown in air and to score a goal you must attempt to throw the ball into the goal. Work in teams of 4 in a 10x20 area. Switching up matches every 5 minutes.
