Specific Aspect - Beating a defender (any area of the park).

Key Principle - Individual Skill.

Session Objective: To improve the players ability to beat a defender.

Warm Up (10 mins):

4 groups of 5 - 20 player squad.

Ball Mastery.

1 ball per player: Dribble - Fast dribble - Inside / outside - Rollover / Stepover - Dragbacks

Core Skill - 1 v 1.

Specific Aspect - Beating a defender (any area of the park).

Key Principle - Individual Skill.

Session Objective: To improve the players ability to beat a defender.

Skill Intro (20 mins):

10 players (2 grids)

Play starts a points 1 & 2. Players carry the ball towars the defender, beat them and then lay the ball off to team mate at points 3 & 4. They than take the ball to the next station, drop it off and get ready to to run at the defnder and beat them.

Defenders to rotate every 2 minutes & start passive.

Step up: Active defending

Players should discover most effective / efficient way to beat the defender whilst mainating control of the ball. Initially ask for something we have used during the season (run directly at the defender with pace, an outside cut (incl shoulder drop), COP or step over) and as the players show understanding ask them to be creative or use a move that they have seen their favourite player do. Supporting player from behind gives another option to the ball carrier.

Session Objective: To improve the players ability to beat a defender.

Skill Training (25 mins):

10 players (2 grids)

5 v 5

To score a goal their must be a 1 v 1 contest during the play.

Player Tasks:

Run straight at a defender to engage them.

Choose the right time to try & beat the player (making sure you are not to close of far away)

Use change of pace & / or direction

Don't let the ball stop, move the ball quickly (running with it or passing)

Coaches Cues:

If I run at the defender am I making him committ?

What can you do when you get to the defender to beat him?

When is the best time to take the defender on?

Can I use my body to protect the ball?

Step Up's: Include joker to team in possession, creates more opportunities for 1 v 1's.

Hidden learning: if attack team looses the ball, need to quickly transition into a BPO position (make the filed small) to try and win back possession / stop a goal being scored as quick as possible.

Core Skill - 1 v 1.

Key Principle - Individual Skill.

Session Objective: To improve the players ability to beat a defender.

Skill Game (20 mins):

10 players (2 grids)

5 v 5 on 1/4 pitch

Team gets 2 goals for a successful 1v1 contest during the build up to the goal.

Black: Attack goal with the keeper to start.

Blue: To score in the 2 unguarded goals.

First to 4 wins - swap sides and re-start.

Be mindful of pitch size, maybe look at 1 less defender to ensure opportunities for a 1v1 situation occur as players have time to receive the ball and look to progress it forward.
