WHEN: The defense in good balance, In the build up phase

WHY: To effectively penetrate the weak side of the field. To help maintain possession

Warm up Exercise - Passing & Receiving (20 mins)

INTENSITY: Low to Moderate ACTIVITY TIME: 3 min before rotations REST: 45-60 secs INTERVALS: 4

Activity:

Passing drill incorporating wide players into midfield 3 and back out wide to switch the point of attack.

Player A plays ball to player B who passes the ball into one of the players in the inner box who combine with others inside the box to pass out to player C. Player C will then pass to D and the sequence repeats in opposite direction to switch the point of attack.

Progression:

-Rotate 3 midfield players

-one of the players in the box to come out the box to receive a one two off the outside players who then passes long to a player in the box

Coaching points (use visual cues)

1. speed of play

2. shoulder check

3. three midfield players being on different lines.

4. Movement to recieve the pass

Note:

Encourage players to play diagonally as if they are trying to switch the play during a game and the movement of the middle 3. Player B / D should always have at least 2 options with the other player remaining high in the box.

-Players to complete FIFA 11+ on their arrival to practice.

Stage 1: 3 goal game (20 mins)

INTENSITY: High ACTIVITY TIME: 3-4 min REST: 45-60 secs INTERVALS: 5

Activity:

-Directional to small goals. Three goals for each team, one goal per third of the field.

-Teams must complete a pass in each grid before being able to score on any of their three goals.

-2 goals for wide goal, 1 goal middle goal.

-Do not allow players to cross zones

Progression: One player from midfield third can cross sections into outside third when their team is in possession.

Coaching points (use visual cues):

1.Speed of play - Can we quickly switch point of attack using 1 and 2 touch passes?

2. Create width to allow point of attack to change quickly.

3. Do not force play, be patient and find open space.

4. Open body position to beable to see the field and swtich the point of attack.

5. 3 midfield players on different lines.

INTENSITY: high ACTIVITY TIME: 3-4 mins REST: 45-60 secs INTERVALS: 5

Activity:

-Players can score in any of the 3 goals.

-No restrictions on play.

-As previous exercise

-But include Player on the ball must assess level of pressure to determine if point of attack should be switched.

Activity

-8 v 8 game

-1-2-3-2 both teams (as illustrated above) 

-one team to play a flat midfield 3 vs a point down midfield 3.

-Directional

-No restrictions on play.

Coaching points (use visual cues):

1.As previous exercises

2. Emphasise switching point of attack through the defence and centre midfielders, use outside forwards to create width.

Note:

- Have #10 playing high acting as the 3rd player in the front 3.

-2 and 3 to act like centre defenders, but also look to provide support to switch the point of attack.
