Agility warm-up (15 mins)

Organization

Players are in pairs & play against each other attempting to tag each others legs/knees to score a point whilst adopting defensive stances. Rotate players to face different players & keep score.

Coaching Points

1. Body shape; angled, bent knees, side on & use of arms for balance/blocking 2. Explosiveness to close down & tag opposition player 3. Explosiveness to dodge to avoid being tagged by opposition player 4. Balance & proprioception 5. Feet & hip coordination 6. Agility.

1v1 Defending Technical Practice (15 mins)

Organization

-8-10 players

Defender passes the ball to Attacker. Attacker attempts to score by dribbling through any of the gates on the Defender’s line. Defending player attempts to win possession of the ball to score by dribbling through the gates on the Attackers line. Then other line goes. Players swap roles frequently.

Coaching Points

1. Speed of approach & angle when closing down 2. Slow down the last yard & be ready for any quick moves or tricks by opponent 3. Body shape - angled & use of arms for balance/blocking 4. Jockeying to show defenders one way 5. Acceleration to close down 6. Deceleration to slow down when approaching defender 7. Balance & proprioception to be in a position to challenge for the ball 8. Feet & hip coordination 9. Agility.

1v1 Defending Skill Practice (15 mins)

Practice begins with defender passing to attacker then defender presses & defends with attacker facing front on. If defender wins the ball they attempt to score in wide small goals. Rotate positions often.

Variations/Progressions

Instead begin with attacker A playing to attacker B with back to goal. Defender must apply pressure & attempt to win the ball. If they win the ball they still attempt to score in wide small goals.

SSG Defending (15 mins)

4v4 SSG with man-to-man marking. Each player pairs up with a player from the opposite team, their responsibility when defending is to know where that player is and prevent them from scoring.
