Defending when disorganised Skill Practice:
Organisation:
Same as on the technique but resting player will start from behind the attackers
Practice:
Same as in technique practice, except attacking players can score in goal and defender try not to concede. Second defender recovers into practice to act as a recovering defender.
Key Factors:
•Tracking and recovery runs to prevent opponents getting behind the defence
•Support first defender closing down
•Second defender offers support and cover
•See the player, see the ball, see the goal, defensive triangle
•Can we push the attack wide and try to win 2nd ball or force play backwards?
•Make decision about whether or not to press
•Can you press? The nearest man to the ball- body shape
•Can’t press? Drop back let the attackers approach and make play predictable
•Can you intercept? Stay on your feet and be patient
•Communication: early, clear and concise “Close down!” Or “Drop”
Restrict space:
•Eliminate best options for opponents
•Encourage mistakes by opponents
•Execution of opponents hurried
•Exclude individual opponents
•Ensure 1 or 2 touches maximum by opponents
Progression:
•NO PROGRESSION OR CREAT OBSTACLES AS YOU GO. YOU HAVE LOTS OF KEY FACTORS TO COACH

Defending when disorganised Technique Practice:
Organisation:
2 teams of 4 players + 2 GK in a junior pitch size
Practice:
They play on to the pitch from the safety zone middle of the pitch and play a 2v1, attackers run the ball over the dotted line, defender cannot go behind the line he retreats no further. The attackers play the ball to the GK after passing dotted line.
Key Factors:
•Delay, drop and narrow
•Remain between the ball and the goal
•Not able to prevent quick attack, prioritise risks
•Allow play go wide or try to push the attacker to the outside rather than central areas
•Be patient
Recovery runs:
•How deep?
•What line?
•Apply pressure
•Supply cover
•Destroy support
•Available to counter
Progression:
•swap attackers with defenders
•Swap defender with the resting defender on the side line
•Let the resting defender make recovery runs and join the other defender in to the pitch
