Technical (30 mins)

Dribbling/RWB relays. Players race from corner to corner, starting in opposite corners. Players have to stop the ball under control in corner box before teammate can proceed. Try to beat other team by racing around grid and returning to original positions. 1 point for a win, 2 points if you catch other team. If fewer or more than 10 players, just use same set up but in straight lines.

1st variation: slalom through cones. Do races with right foot only & left foot only.

2nd variation: pick up 2 outside cones, leaving only middle cone & circle the cone. Right & left feet.

3rd variation: pick up middle cone and perform sole drags. Right & left feet

4th variation: run with the ball. Right & left feet

Coaching points:

- explode out of corners towards cones & explode out of cones (changle of direction/pace)

- get low to slalom through cones, keeping ball close

- eyes up to see SPACE as exiting cones

- dribble with smaller touches, run with ball with bigger touches

- what surfaces should you use to dribble or run with the ball? Why?

Skill opposed (30 mins)

Roughly 20 by 15 grid with halfway line marked out. 2 teams divided equally. 1 is attacking & 1 is goalkeepers & defenders. Play starts by players on opposite corners running out to attack opposite goals. Defender chooses 1 attacker to defend (dribbler) & 1 attacker runs unopposed to goal (running with ball) Keep score by tracking goals. 1st defender stays out for 2 attacking phases, then switches. Play for 3 minutes and reverse roles.

Progression: after the player who is running with the ball breaks the midfield line another defender comes to pressure on a recovery run. The original defender then exits to back of the line, while second defender defends next attack. They defend the player running with the ball & the dribbler in their 2 sequences.

Coaching points:

- look to break at pace. See the SPACE, use your SKILL, attack with SPEED.

- protect the ball by dribbling with foot furthest from defender

- change your angle to cut out defender when running with the ball.

- look to get shot away early. Only have to beat defender once!

SSG (15 mins)

Final game SSG ( if 10 still, 2 teams 5v5. If 11, 1 coach plays to make 3 teams of 4v4)

Shadow game. Can only tackle player you are matched up with on other team. If uneven numbers, have a neutral. Can the players recognize when they have space to run with the ball? Is there space in behind/beside defender to dribble at?

Players have to look to lose their marker when their team is in possession.

Have questions at end about when to dribble (to beat or avoid defender) or when to run with ball (after beating defender or when there's space to drive into).

What surfaces/touches do we use when?

What do we have to do first in order to make quick decisions? (Scan the SPACE)
