GENERAL HANDLING

ORGANISATION

Practice is set up with x4 Red Cones spaced evenly apart and x2 Yellow Cones spaced 6 yards apart to incorporate a goal.

GK moves over or through the cones to the small goal. Server then hits a ball at varying heights and speed from hand or foot using varying techniques for the GK to collect including -

- Volley

- Half volley

- Ball bouncing in front of GK

- Along the ground

GK can also vary footwork through the cones after every x6 serves including -

- One foot in cones x6

- Two feet in cones x6

- In and out x6

- Sideways (left and right) x6

KEY COACHING POINTS

- Appropriate footwork to move in line of the ball if necessary

- Prepare the hands early

- Make sure GK is 'set' as ball is struck

- Use appropriate catching technique depending on the flight of the ball

- Make sure good service is being delivered to GK

PROGRESSION

Moving the session on now to a game realistic situation with x3 attacking players (in blue) against x2 defenders (in red) and a GK. The defenders are restricted to play within the penalty area, allowing the attackers to shoot from any distance - but the attackers must not stray offside. The GK has to adjust position accordingly. Attackers must be encouraged to shoot when possible or when an opening occurs to try and work the GK in relation to the defenders.

KEY COACHING POINTS

- GK should be in line of the ball at all times (considering the angle)

- GK gets 'set' as the attacker shapes up to shoot

- Good communication between GK and defenders

- GK should be encouraged to try and hold onto the ball when saving

- Attackers should be ready to try and follow up on rebounds

Small Sided Game (20 mins)

SMALL SIDED GAME

Quarter pitch practice, x2 goals with GK's. 3v3 in the middle with x1 floating player in the central area who always plays with the attacking team. In addition, x2 wide players in the 'Dead Zone' who can be used by the team in possession of the football. The wide players must return the ball quickly being restricted to two touch football, but they can move up and down the line and can shoot for goal if the oppertunity presents itself. This means the team in possession always have an overload which means there should be more attempts at goal.

KEY COACHING POINTS

- As the ball travels around the pitch, The GK should adjust positions accordingly

- Goal attempts should now come in at different angles and as the players line up to shoot the GK should get into line in a 'set' position ready to make a save

- Decide early on the type of save and what type of handling technique to use then attempt to commit to stopping the ball

- Make sure game is fluent and good passing is on display in order for the GK to have good service during the game
