Screen 1 (15 mins)

For the session warm up,the drill "Forward pass, layoff and shoot".Bib up two equal teams with keepers.Position three cones on the edge of the box and position three groups of players behind each.Place plenty of balls by each cone.

Starting with group 1,the first player plays the ball into coach A who then lays the ball back for the player to shoot at the goals.Coach A after the lay off must get out of the way so as to not block the vision of the keeper.Work your way after each shot to the next cone.Any balls that go wide must be retrieved by the players.

Your looking for a good accurate pass in to the coach,a good lay off by the coach, and a good shot by the player.

Shooting points.

1 Position body within easy distance of the ball.

2 Plant standing foot along side the ball, not too close.

3 Arms out for balance

4 Bring shooting foot right back.

5 Lock ankle.

6 Strike straight through through the ball, following through after contact.

7 Try to strike the ball on the laces.

8 Head over the ball ,keeps the ball low, head back means the ball will go heigher.

Make sure the keeper is ready before each shot ,but this can act as a good work out fot him so try to keep the shots coming.

When the players have have got to grips with the drill, replace the coach with a player, and change every few minutes.

Screen 2 (15 mins)

The progression from the previous drill is a pass to the coaches in a wide position and finishing with a shot as before.Working back and fore from group 1 to group 2.The difference being the player is striking the ball with it coming across the player instead of it coming towards the player as in the first drill. This is a suttle difference ,but a difference all the same. When the players have got the hang of it replace the coaches with players and change every few minutes.

Screen 3 (30 mins)

This small sided game brings together the previous two drills. You've got your teams bibbed up,using cones and mini goals mark out a pitch suitable for the number of players .Here one team attempt to switch the play from one wing to the other in order to create crossing and 2v1 situations for a shot on goal.Screen 4 shows the other team who make forward passes and try to run forward to receive set backs for a shot on goal.

Both teams have four players on the pitch and two players on the outside.

The game is played for two ten minute halves.

for the second half the teams switch roles.this means the team playing wide now has two target Forwards and the team playing forward now have wingers.

Goals can only be scored once a pass has been made into the target forwards or wingers who are limited to two touches.

If the ball leaves play then the game is restarted by a pass from where it left play

The progression was ,the wingers and target forwards now join the game for the duration of an attack and also when a player passes to a target player or winger ,they change places with them once the ball has been passed..

Overall the session went well, as most drills involving shooting usually do .Getting players to work on their technique for shooting was good to improve the power of the shot .The progressions on the small sided games worked well as the players on the outside of the pitch wre never there for long.
