Warm Up

Organization: 2 Grids.

Instructions: Players dribble at each cone and perform a Xavi turn before dribbling to the next one and finally laying the ball off at the end of the line of players. Reverse direction of play to work both feet.

Coaching Points:

1) Checking over turning shoulder before and during turn

2) The 'Three Es' of the move, entry, execution & exit. (Messi dribble into the move, slight slow down and adjustment of body position as performing the move, sharp turn using the outside of the foot and accelerate out of the move to gain separation from the defender.

3) Pick head straight up to assess next move (pass, dribble or shoot).

Organization: 3 grids.

Instructions: Player B passes to Player A who takes a touch and dribbles to either gate. Player B pressures to close of the passing lane (must go around cone to create correct angle of pressure to illicit the move) and Player A executes a Xavi turn and plays a pass to the NEXT PLAYER B in line. Players A and B switch lines and the drill repeats itself.

Coaching Points:

1) The 'Three Es' of the move, entry, execution & exit. (Messi dribble into the move, slight slow down and adjustment of body position as performing the move with a check over turning shoulder before and during the move, sharp turn using the outside of the foot and accelerate out of the move to gain separation from the defender.

3) Pick head straight up to assess next move (pass, dribble or shoot).

4) Tightness and speed of turn may depend upon positioning of defender.

5) Type, weight, speed and angle of pass may depend upon positioning of defender.

6) Talk about when and where this move is appropriate.

7) Talk about how this move helps shield the ball and why that is important.
