SAQ Warm-up

Organization:

1. 20yd area with 10yd intervals.

2. Yellow and blue gates at opposite ends.

3. Players work in two lines.

Instructions:

1. Players perform various movements (high knees, lunges, and so on).

2. On coach's command players must run through colored gate (blue or yellow).

Coaching Points:

1. Correct execution of physical movements.

2. Awareness and quickness.

3. Gradual increase of intensity.

Developmental Repetitions

Organization:

1. 20x15 areas.

2. Three groups of four players.

3. Plenty of balls.

Instructions:

1. Player A passes to B and stays.

2. Player B receives and dribbles at Player C.

3. Player C applies passive pressure to Player B.

4. Player B beats Player C with scissors move and replaces him on endline.

5. Player C replaces Player B at middle.

6. Player B, now at endline, repeats process in opposite direction with Player D.

7. Player A pressures Player D in same fashion.

Coaching Points:

1. Checking movements.

2. Connection - eye contact and verbal communication.

3. Receive on the move.

4. Receive on back foot.

5. Execution of move.

Technical Semi-Opposed

Organization:

1. 20x10 areas as shown.

Instructions:

1.Two options. Start with option A then move on to option B after a few minutes.

2. Option A: defensive pressure is late or defender sits back to cut off forward pass

3. Server plays a diagonal ball. Player receiving opens up and plays target player.

4. Option B: pressure is tight, attacker receives across body before completing forward pass.

5. Target player dribbles back to start at end of both options.

Coaching Points:

1. Checking movement to create passing lane.

2. Weight and accuracy of pass.

3. Connection - eye contact.

4. Get in line to receive.

5. Body shape.

Progressions:

1. Allow defender to go live.

Fully Opposed Game

Organization:

1. 40x30 area with halfway line.

2. Two goals.

3. Two teams set up as shown.

4. Plenty of balls along outside.

Instructions:

1. 1v1 set up in each half.

2. Two GK/servers.

3. GK starts the game by playing into either player.

4. A player from the team in possession joins in from the endline to create a 2v1 in the attacking half.

5. Play 2v1 to goal.

6. If the defending player wins possession, his team plays 2v1 in the opposite half.

7. Restart with new players after a shot is taken, after a goal, or if the ball goes out of play.

Coaching Points:

1. Commit defender to the ball - role of 1st attacker.

2. Move to support ball and/or create passing lane - role of 2nd attacker.

3. Angle and distance of support from 2nd attacker.

4. Movement to use passing lanes - role of 3rd attacker.

5. Decision-making of each player.

6. Selection and timing of combination.

7. Play at speed to take advantage of numbers up.

Progressions:

1. Allow free movement from defensive half following entry pass to attacking half.

4v4 Free Play

Organization:

1. Two goals.

2. 30x20

3. Three teams (two active).

Instructions:

1. Two minutes or two goals.

2. Winner stays on.

3. Three teams of 4 players each rotating on and off.

Coaching Points:

1. Role of first attacker - penetrate

2. Role of second attacker - support

3. Role of third attacker - unbalance

4. Movement and ability to take up different roles/positions

5. Speed of play to create numbers advantages
