Control the tempo. Encourages sliding defence, exploiting gaps, covering, changes of pace and direction. Dynamic stretches in breaks.

Defending 1 v1 (25 mins)

How to Play

Players in the middle pass back & forth using 1 touch.

Once a player takes a second touch he has to try and play to the target player at the far end.

Key Points

React immediately.

Stay between the ball and the target player.

Try to win the ball off any poor touch.

Defending 2 v 2 (25 mins)

How to Play

Yellows serve to Reds (simulated clearance) to turn and attack the Blue defenders.

Next attack from the opposite end.

Key Points

Anticipate the direction of the attack.

Get between the ball and the goal.

Pressure any poor touch.

Angle & distance of covering players.

Progression

3 v 2 in favour of the attackers.

Recovering defender from the opposite half.

Defend the Counter (25 mins)

Organisation

Pitch is divided into 3 but with a half way line. The other lines are used as offside lines.

How to Play

Start with a 4 v 4 in one half of the pitch (Reds are attacking the Blue goal). If the Blues win the ball they counter attack the other goal - the 18 yard line is the offside line going the other way.

Key Points

Individual match ups.

Lines of recovery from players ahead of the ball.

Win the ball on the way back if possible.
