King of the Ring (10 mins)

Organization

20 x 20 yard square. Each player has a ball except one player (or coach) who is "it". Players start to dribble inside the grid while trying to avoid having their ball kicked out of the grid by the player who is "it". Players may re-enter grid after retrieving their ball.

Coaching Points

When you see the player who is "it", turn, dribble away or protect ball with body

Keep head up, awareness of all players and "it" person

Blob Tag (10 mins)

Organization

"Blob Tag" - 20 x 20 yard square. All the players are inside the grid. All but three have a soccer ball at their feet. The three without a ball form a 'blob' by holding hands. The blob moves freely in the grid and tries to kick any player’s ball out of the grid. If a player’s ball leaves the grid he/she joins the blob.

Once a chain has six or more players, have it break apart into two smaller chains (of three people each). The last player dribbling is the winner.

Variations

Change the size of the grid. Bigger grid makes it easier for dribblers.

Have blobs break into two players per blob. (Harder for dribblers).

Coaching Points

"Stay away from the blob" - that's the purpose of the game.

"Don’t get trapped" - move into space away from the blob.

"Keep control of the ball" - don’t kick it too far away.

"Work together" - the blob must work as a team. They must stay together when kicking balls out of the grid.

Tom & Jerry (Cat & Mouse) (10 mins)

Organization

20 x 20 yard grid. Players are in pairs. One player has ball (Cat), other player does not (Mouse). On command, "Run, Jerry, Run", the 'Mouse' can run away anywhere in the grid. The 'Cat', dribbles the ball and tries to catch him (by kicking ball against mouse, below the knee), this rarely happens. Then, after a minutes or so, Coach shouts "Come on Tom, catch that mousey!". Everyone stops, 'Mice' stand facing partner, with feet spread wide apart, the 'Cats' try to pass ball through legs. Everyone changes over and repeat.

Coaching Points

Dribble ball close, small touches, not big.

When passing, plant non-kicking foot, use the inside of kicking foot, swing leg from hip (No Toe Kicks)

Encourage 'Mice' to change speed as well as direction
