Starting Lineup

1-4-2-3-1 is the formation that we have seemed most solid and confident throughout the season. The central part of the field is so important for this game as we gave up so much in the last game against this team right down the middle of the field.

PLEASE NOTE: THE UNIVERSAL USE OF DOTTED LINES IS FOR PLAYER MOVEMENT. THIS SOFTWARE USES DOTTED LINES FOR PASSING INSTEAD. THESE ARE PLAYER MOVEMENT LINES NOT PASSING LINES!!

1. PRIMARY FOCUS: VERY COMPACT BACK 4

*Work hard to have our #2 & #3 defensive backs stay narrow to really compress the middle of the field.

* Destroy all attacks through the central areas.

* #2, #3 really pinch in narrow when the ball is on opposite side of the field.

*Pinch in narrow on goal kicks

*PATIENCE, PATIENCE, PATIENCE & POSITION, POSITION, POSITION

in other words don't over commit to tackles, don't jab, recover centrally!

2. CONTROL THE MIDDLE OF THE FIELD WITH #6 & #8

During our first game against this team we gave away 3 really sloppy goals directly down the center of the field (off goal kicks, sloppy giveaways and poor 1 v1 defending).

THERFORE:

It's super important that we:

*ensure one or both (#6 & #8) should always find themselves in the center of the field as a shield for the back line.

*Are strong in our tackles (winning 50/50 balls)

*have STRONG COMMUNICATION and connectivity between #6 & #8

*are accurate in our outlet passing to our #10, to our wing players etc

*keep the play out in front of our defensive line as much as possible so we are not chasing back to our goal.

*plug the gaps and ensure we are a good shield for the defensive unit.

3. Attacking Focus: WIDTH, WIDTH, WIDTH!!

Getting the ball out wide to our #7 & #11. Create some mismatches in the wing areas (2 v1s) so we can get quality crosses into the box.

*we are a better team when we are working well in the wing areas. Let's maximize it's usage

*We MUST release the ball earlier than we have been doing so far this season. Dribbling is a tool for a purpose, not an end in itself. We dribble to create time and space for a better pass or shot. Once space has been created, use the ball effectively.

*if you get turned around by a defender in attacking 1/3 look for a release point, a team mate to lay the ball off to. Don't hold onto the ball trying again and again to beat the same defender.
