Skill Intro (10 mins)

Grids 8 - 10yds long & 6 - 8yds wide.

A - Players pass the ball to the opposite side and follow; angling their run to the Left or Right of the receiving player. The receiving player takes their first touch away from the oncoming player, before making a pass and continuing the cycle.

B - Players pass to the opposite side and run straight at the receiving player, forcing the player to make their own decision on where to take their first touch.

Coaching points:

- Ensure the quality of the service pass.

- Players should be on the balls of their feet ready to receive left or right footed.

- Demo controlling the ball using the inside of the foot; open foot with knee pointing away at a right angle to the standing leg, hips & shoulders pointing towards the target area for control. Cusion the ball into that area.

Players should progress to experimenting with both feet, including the outside of the foot.

Skill Training (20 mins)

Grid size: 15 x 15yds to begin. Increase or decrease grid size according to players ability, or numbers. Easiest - 4 v 1, 3 v 1, 5 v 2, 4 v 2 - Hardest

A - 4 v 1 with a 2 touch mandatory rule. Force the players to take a good 1st touch to move the ball away from the defender and keep possession.

B - 3 v 1 with a 2 touch mandatory rule. This time the player on the ball must always have 2 passing options, meaning, one of the players will have to move each time the ball does.

Competition - Give defenders 1min to see how many touches they get, or mistakes they force.

Possible Coaching Comments:

"Move to support as the ball moves."

"Make angles, don't just stand in the corners."

"Keep your body open to face the pitch."

"See the defender, and use your 1st touch to move the ball away from them."

"Use body feints to disguise your intention."

Skill Game (25 mins)

5 v 5 in double penalty box area (44 x 36yds)

Game starts with payers having to take 2 touches, each time in possession. Give players a 3rd or 4th touch if they are struggling, but come back to 2 touches before introducting open play.

Increase or dcrease the playing size as required, and consider adding a 'joker' in to give the team in possession a numerical advantage.
