Handball with Breakaway Finish (15 mins)

Set Up:

Goals are 45-50 yards apart. One goal will be made of cones or corner flags. Width is roughly 15 yards. Players in middle play in 25 x 15 yard grid. There are 2 target players for each team on the ends of the grid in the direction they are attacking (T).

Goalkeepers should be warming up as game is being explained.

How it works:

Hand passing, 6 v 6 in middle with 2 target players for each team. Team connects 4-5 passes and then plays into target. Target player plays through ball for any teammate to finish by feet. Defenders are not allowed in scoring zone. After an attacker shoots on goal, they become the target player and target player plays inside.

If player doesn't score then they must make recover run to cone; if they forget 3 push ups before getting back in.

Game restarts with goalkeeper. Play 4-6 minute halves then switch sides so both teams get opportunity to finish on real goal.

Progression 1: Can score right away.

Progression 2: Introduce cone check before receiving.

Progression 3: Must move after making pass for team to keep possession.

Keys:

1. Quick ball movement to penetrate defense.

2. Spatial Awareness

3. Determination to score.

4. Finish at game pace

Breakaway Finish Under Pressure + Tight touches (20 mins)

Set up:

8 players are 5-10 yards outside box in two lines of 4. The remaining 8 players are in two lines doing tight touches. Once players finish their tight touches they join the finishing lines. Players who complete finishing, join the dribbling like a circuit.

Circuit cones are about 1/2 yard apart.

How it works:

Finishing

Coach throws ball for attacker to run onto ball and finish while defender tracks them down to stop them from scoring. Goalkeepers play normally.

If attacker scores then defender grabs ball to join dribbling line. If attacker doesn't score then attacker must grab ball.

Goalkeepers switch roles every 4 shots. Goalkeeper not involved helps with ball collection.

Switch roles after 10 minutes.

Progression:

Service is bouncing/awkward balls. Attackers still have defender to deal with.

Progression 2:

Attackers/defenders start in lying position, face down.

Score can be kept between 2 players.

Keys:

1. Attack ball, continue with speed/determination to score.

2. Get control of ball/cut in front or away from defender

3. Headup to view keeper

4. Make a decision

5. Execute/Keep it low using inside of foot

Dribbling portion:

Skill 1: Inside-inside, outside-outside:

Players do 2 touches with inside of foot (toe part), 2 touches with outside of foot (they are going in between the cones).

Work one foot at a time. Then switch feet.

After dribbling through, far line passes to last person in line. Inside line brings ball to finishing.

Keys:

1. Bend back to maximize speed

2. Stay on toes (don't let your heels touch the ground).

3. Use the toe part of foot when using inside and the touch step on outside

4. Ensure your foot gets around ball when changing direction

Possession For Finishing Breakaways & Linking up (25 mins)

Set up:

Grid is set up 10 yards from box with an open area for through ball to be played. Grid is approximately 15 X 30. 5 v 5 + 1 or 2 Neutrals in grid. 4 or 5 support players on outside.

How it works:

Team in possession tries to play through balls for team-mates to finish on goal. Each time a team has possession, they must play 1 pass before they can play a through ball. Neutral players on outside cannot be pressured and should try to play with 1 or 2 touches. If ball goes out of play, a neutral player is quick to get game started again.

Goalkeeper not in goal is active with coach.

Play 3-4 minute rounds before changing players in middle.

Progression:

Players must time run to not be offside. Finish can be completed but goal doesn't count. If players are very successful then 1 defender can follow in. Another player also must make a supporting run to finish a rebound opportunity. If a support player doesn't follow then the goal doesn't count.

Progression 2:

Introduce target player with defender. Team must play into striker who then lays off into supporting players. 2 supporting players come in and 1 defender from zone can follow (3 v 2).

Defender allows striker's 1st touch before stealing ball.
