This is a UEFA B Licence drill looking at Introducing a Switch of Play and the benefits this has when in possession. It will help illustrate to the players the movements and types of passing required to move the ball from one side of the grid to the other.
Set-Up - 8 Blue 8 Red
2 End Zones within a 30x20 grid.
The teams will have a ball each to start of with. They will move the ball from one end zone ro another when there is an available player there to receive. The players within the middle of the grid will decide when to drop into the end zones and a switch of play can take place.
This will help them to develop the movements required to play these accurately.
Coaching Points - Movement from middle players to recognise when to drop out.
- player on the ball must relese the ball out quickly to start the process of the switch
- Another of the middle players must drop deep into a position to become the link between the 2 ends
- Accuracy and weight of pass is key so it is not cut out or intercepted.
Progression - Make it competitve with Blue vs Red 1 ball End Zone game. Each time they succesfully switch they score a point.

Organization
3-5 players & 2 mannequins/flags to replace a GK if not available. The centre of the penalty box is restricted by 3 cones/mannequins/poles.
Player 'A' starts about 5yds outside the penalty box and dribbles towards it centrally. Player 'B' is around the penalty spot. The mannequins are about 1.5yds inside the goalpost, 5yds apart.
Starting Point
Play always starts with Player 'A' rolling the ball out of his/her feet and dribbling towards the central area of the penalty box. Switch positions after strike on goal.
Action
Player 'A' dribbles the ball towards the penalty box. Player 'B' quickly decides to move to either side of the central area. Player 'A' recognizes the movement & plays a pass to 'B' who plays a wall pass back to 'A'' (first time if possible) to finish (within 1 touch if possible) into the target areas.
Coaching Points
Reading the movement (scan shoulders) for correct decisions, Creating Space (Open Body to receive), Preparing to play 1 touch, Passing into space, Receiving and striking at goal on the run, Accurate Finish (pass the ball into the net inside the box).
