SAQ (5 mins)

Organization:

2x 2 yard starting gates

4x 2 yard finishing gates (2 blue in line with and 10 yards from eithr side of nearest starting gate, 2 yellow 20 yards opposite blue)

4-6 SAQ/agility marker cones

players in pairs and split into 2 teams

Instructions:

On coaches command each pair race through the SAQ marker cones in a way designated by the coach (bunny hops, 2 forward 1 back etc.).

When past last marker the player must check over his shoulder, the coach holds up either a blue or yellow pinnie just before the first player does this.

If the coach holds up a yellow pinnie the first player through the yellow gate wins a point for their team (and the same for blue).

Repeat for next pair.

Play first team to x amount of points

Coaching Points:

Your decision is based on the information you receive from checking your shoulder

Progressions:

Teams now split, half go into opposite gate and have balls

-if coach holds up blue pinnie, a double pass must be played and ball stopped in between blue cones to score point.

-if coach holds up yellow pinnie the player must take positive 1st touch toward yellow gate and stop ball in between to score point.

Technical (20 mins)

Organization:

As above

Instructions:

B checks to an angle and receives a pass from A. B opens up and passes to C. C then dribbles back and gives ball to D. Each player moves to new position (follow pass) and the process repeats.

Coaching Points:

- Check to an angles (timing)

- Body position (open)

- Communication (hands and voice)

- Quality of 1st touch (direction, weight)

- Quality of pass (Accuracy, weight)

Semi-opposed (20 mins)

Organization:

Set up as above

Instructions:

Play begins with player on ball taking a touch out of his feet to one side or another. target reacts to make passing lane whilst defender blocks it. Middle player checks away and receives ball, opens up and finds target.

Rotation: Passer - Defender - Receiver - Target

Coaching Points:

- Good touch out of feet and head up.

- Movement of target to create passing lane.

- Movement of midddle player to check away - open body.

- Communication

- Quality of pass - back foot.

- Break line and beat defender with first touch

Progressions:

- Defender presses first pass to add pressure. If defender gets really tight them beat them with a touch inside.

Gate Game (20 mins)

Organization:

35x35 yard grid

2 teams of 6 split playing 4v4 with 2 target players

4x 5 yard gates (2 blue, 2 red) opposite each other

Instructions:

Team scores point by passing to target player, when target player receives ball he comes into the 4v4 play with his 1st touch and the player who scored by passing ball to him takes his place inside the target gate.

Team must then try to score by playing into opposite target player. (Team can play back to target just come from but only as support player and not to gain point, unless they lose possesion of ball then regain it so the direction of play has been reset to neutral and they can play into either target player).

First team to x points wins

Coaching Points:

Can you receive ball and turn to face the target player which need to play to next to score point.

Receive on the half turn/back foot when possible.

Play to a team mates back foot when possible.

Check shoulder regularly to assess your situation (pressure/space/opportunities etc.)

Speed of play (can I play quick enough to immediately score upon receiving ball).

Mentality to always try to play towards your goal first.

Can I time my checks to receive ball in enough space to turn and score.

Quality of checks/passing/receiving on the turn.
