Warm-up: Rondo (10 mins)

Organization:

10 x 10 or 15 x 15 depending on numbers

Player 1 (defender) : 2 (attackers) ratio

Max amount of player in a grid = 5 attackers

Instructions:

1. Possession game where there is 1 defender every 2 players. Defender tries to steal the ball. "Attackers" try to possess. (Much like keep away)

2. Defender tries to touch the ball. If he/she does they switch with the player who lost possession.

3. If the ball goes out the defender stays the same (defenders must touch or steal the ball away to become an attacker)

4. Progress to Rondo transfer box (P3)

Coaching Points:

1. Communication

2. Awareness of space/pressure etc.

3. Try to play to back foot and turn to switch ball in other direction when receive it if possible

4. Quality/weight of passes.

5. Angles/distances of support

6. Constantly re-evaluate your position (can I be in a better position?)

Progressions:

(P1) - 5 passes equals a life against the current defender. Must stay in for a second round after touching the ball

(P2) - A nutmeg or a through ball (if there are two defenders) counts away a life against the defenders.

(P3) - Rondo transfer: two grids are combined and the teams work against each other

Technical - Unopposed (20 mins)

(from Ian Richard's: Curriculum, Tier 2, Passing)

Organization:

10 x 15 yard area with 3 x 3 yard area either end, set up as shown

Players work individually

One ball per pair

Instructions:

1. Players must look to pass the ball into their partner’s area for a point

2. Their partner must attempt to control the ball without leaving their area. If the receiver can control the ball inside the box with 1 touch, they also receive a point

Coaching Points:

Direction of the pass

Head up to observe target

Placement of non-kicking foot

Hitting ball slightly off center – opposite to kicking foot

Heel down, toe up

Quick touch off the ball (when receiving) depending on the pace

Progressions:

(P1) - If the ball is sent out of the box the receiver can still get a point if he/she takes the 1st touch into the box

(P2) - Increase the distance

(R1) - Reduce the distance

Technical Semi-opposed (20 mins)

Organization:

10x10 yd boxes with two 2yd gates set up in the corners of each box

4 groups of 3 set up as shown

1 ball per group

2 players start in outside corner of their area and 1 player waits to receive at the opposite corner

Instructions:

1. Player with the ball plays a pass to the player at the opposite corner then watches to see which goal the receiving player takes his touch toward and runs through the opposite goal, then to center cone to be the next receiver

2. Receiving player takes the desired 1st touch toward one of the gates and dribbles through, before rejoining the line

3. Pass is played by the next player in line as soon as the receiver is ready and in position

Rd. 1 - open to the closest gate with the inside of the foot

Rd. 2 - take touch across the body to the farthest gate with the inside of the foot

Rd. 3 - take touch across the body to the farthest gate with the outside of the (opposite) foot

* after Rd. 3, move to 1st progression *

Coaching Points:

1. Get in line with the ball as it travels,

2. Choose the appropriate surface of the foot,

3. Head up before receiving to observe open space,

4. Contact with middle of the ball,

5. First touch into space

Progressions:

(P1) - Player with the ball plays a pass to the player waiting to receive in the center, then immediately runs to one gate or the other. Receiving player observes the movement of his teammate as the ball travels and takes his 1st touch toward the open gate and dribbles through the gate

(P2)- Player that begins with the ball becomes a defender after the pass and can win the ball after running through one of the gates

(P3) - Passing player can defend without running through a gate, use small goals to pass into instead of gates to dribble through (as seen in top/right grid)

2. Receiving player takes first touch to control, attacking either direction, and tries to score any time after his first touch

3. Defending player can not move until the ball has reached the receiving player

4. 1 pt for scoring from central area, 2 pts for scoring in shaded area in front of goal (encourage players to attack the space with their first touch)

Coaching Points:

1. All previous points

2. Observe the position of the defender to determine the space to take the touch into

3. Disguise the direction of the first touch

4. Use first touch to set up next action, i.e. a pass into the goal

Progressions:

(P2) - Add GK's into rotation in each goal

Regressions:

(R1) - No goals, dribble into endzone to score
