Warm-up: Rondo

Prior to activity:

3 Player - 4 Corner Passing activity (Plus one defender)

Organization:

10 x 10 or 15 x 15 depending on numbers

Player 1 (defender) : 2 (attackers) ratio

Max amount of player in a grid = 5 attackers

Instructions:

1. Possession game where there is 1 defender every 2 players. Defender tries to steal the ball. Attackers try to possess. (Much like keep away)

2. Defender tries to touch the ball. If he/she does they switch with the player who lost possession.

3. If the ball goes out the defender stays the same (defenders must touch or steal the ball away to become an attacker)

4. Progress to Rondo transfer box (P3)

Progressions:

(P1) - 5 passes equals a life against the current defender. Must stay in for a second round after touching the ball

(P2) - A nutmeg or a through ball (if there are two defenders) counts away a life against the defenders.

(P3) - Rondo transfer: two grids are combined and the teams work against each other

Playing through the Defense (Wide)

Organization:

Full Practice field - 40 x 30

Area working in - 30 x 30

4 v 6 in a 20 x 30 area

2 v 2 in a 10 x 30 area

Instructions:

Phase of Play. Encourage the players to spread out while playing. Freezing the play when they become too clumped up and play with their heads down. Layer in restrictions to organize the defense and show them how to move on/off the ball when in possession and trying to regain the ball. One of the restrictions is that the defenders must pass the ball side to side before moving forward in order to replicate the same pressure they may get in a game. This also helps to reinforce our earlier topics of maintaining ball under pressure using skills or our bodies to shield the opposing players off.

Coaching Points:

1. Spatial Awareness - spreading out on the field when our team has the ball. Collapsing once the ball has been turned over. Players recognizing their role and responsibility with where they play on the field.

2. Angle of approach - Specific technique being coached

3. Head up to observe your target

4. Supporting foot - Specific technique

5. Contact with the ball

6. Contact with the foot

7. Body weight

Restrictions:

1. L / R Defenders must stay in channel areas.

2. Defense must play the ball from one side to the other before connecting with the midfielders or forwards.

3. L / R Defenders are permitted to collapse in the center if opposing team has the ball.
