1st attacker:

looking to penetrate – head up to see 3rd line (player finding passing lane) and play vertical passes

Patience – when to play sideways

Do I play to feet or space?

Weight of pass to move defenders to create lanes

Disguise of pass to play through the lines

Can i penetrate by dribbling?

2nd attacker:

When to move - early movement, (as ball travels) recognition when 1st attacker needs support

Where to move (angle to receive) deep or as high as possible?

Body shape

Technique to receive/ far foot?

Decision making where to play as the ball is moving

3rd attacker:

Movement wide to create passing lanes

Movement deep to go in behind and receive in behind

Decision of 1st attacker (penetrate / possess / play behind) effected by movement of 3rd attacker

Technique and recognition to combine centrally to compact defense before going wide

Coaching Points:

Movement away (long) to create team space

Can I check back to receive the ball?

Drifting away as ball travels while still seeing the ball and leaving space open you want to move into

Recognizing teammate is going to pass (visual cue – head up, head down / player in possession is about to be under pressure)

Quality and timing of run to receive when checking into space (how is the defender affected, not coming too deep into 2nd attacker’s line)

Decision to make diagonal or straight runs in behind / on-sides tactics
