Passing circle (20 mins)

Organization: Layout a Circle, approx. 30 yards radius. Split players into two equal teams, if possible Players inside start with a ball each, (Also have spares available).

Instructions:

To start the exercise players with the ball perform a push pass to a free outside player, then follow the pass to replace the outside player.

The outside player makes a positive 1st touch into the circle and repeats the technique to another free player.

Play for set time ensuring that they are performing the push pass at the beginning.

Coaching Points:

Players on ouside must be on their toes - call for the ball if they are open.

Positive 1st touch into the circle with heads up.

Quality passes.

Push pass - lock ankle, strike middle of ball with inside of foot, follow through and look at position of non-kicking foot. Focus on passing through the ball.

Outside of foot pass - lock ankle and hit through the middle of the ball this time with outside of foot.

Focus on getting them to strike through the ball and follow through as opposed to flicking at it with their non-kicking foot too far away.

Good combinations - play consistently.

Communication - verbal and visual

Progressions:

Passing player closesdown outside player passively

Limit touches allowed so that the players have to make a longer push pass having received the ball (Two touch for example - control and pass immediately

Inside player uses outside of foot passes to the perimeter player.

Inside player passes but this time gets the ball back from outside player (must communicate “play back"). Then turns to pass to another free outside player, with the appropriate communication ("Take").

Receiving along the ground (20 mins)

Organization:

10x15 yards set up as shown

12 players set up as shown

6 balls

Instructions:

Two teams facing each other about 12 -15 yards away

One team starts with the ball, dribbles 5 yards towards the the opposite line and passes to first player

and follow the pass joining the back of the line - repeat

Coaching Points:

Get in line with the ball early

Assess the situation as ball travels

Select controlling surface

Withdraw surface to cushion impact

Good first touch out of feet/pressure

Progressions:

Turn this into a rely race, 1st complete a full rotation (back to where they started wins)

Pressure the player receiving the ball - Passively

If you have tw teams see if they can play diagonal

Make distance between cones shorter, play two touch then one touch.

4v4 to end zones (20 mins)

Organization:

Set up a 30x20 with two 5yd end zones at either end.

Play 4v4 in the area.Players score by successfully dribbling into the end zone. Play for 5-6 minutes each game.

Instructions:

Players score by successfully dribbling into the end zone.

Play for 5-6 minutes each game.

Coaching Points:

Quality of 1st touch under pressure. (Can players get a half-turn in on reception to make the ball go forward.)

Aggressive touches as they near the end zone.

Look before receiving. (Get players to think ahead - read the game.)

Create space with their movement.

Make the field big – length and width.

Progressions:

Limit touches – play with a maximum of 3 then 2 touches.

Replace end zones with a large goal at each end and have teams score by dribbling through as an end scrimmage.
