UEFA B Switch of Play Warm-Up (15 mins)

This is a UEFA B Licence drill looking at Introducing a Switch of Play and the benefits this has when in possession. It will help illustrate to the players the movements and types of passing required to move the ball from one side of the grid to the other.

Set-Up - 8 Blue 8 Red

2 End Zones within a 30x20 grid.

The teams will have a ball each to start of with. They will move the ball from one end zone ro another when there is an available player there to receive. The players within the middle of the grid will decide when to drop into the end zones and a switch of play can take place.

This will help them to develop the movements required to play these accurately.

Coaching Points - Movement from middle players to recognise when to drop out.

- player on the ball must relese the ball out quickly to start the process of the switch

- Another of the middle players must drop deep into a position to become the link between the 2 ends

- Accuracy and weight of pass is key so it is not cut out or intercepted.

Progression - Make it competitve with Blue vs Red 1 ball End Zone game. Each time they succesfully switch they score a point.

UEFA B Switch of Play Component 1 (20 mins)

This is a UEFA B Licence Component 1 drill looking at Introducing a Switch of Play and the benefits this has when in possession. It will look at the switch of play in a more game related setting. Involving Attack v Defence going 1-way.

Set-Up - (Blue 4 Midfielders 2 Strikers) (Red 2 Defenders 1 Defensive Midfielder)

Play will start from the CM bouncing the ball with either of the 3 midfielders. Dependant on which way the play starts the CM will look at switching to the other side.

Once the switch has taken place, the wide midfielder will take on the mannequin and deliver a cross into the box. The Strikers plus 1 supporting midfielder will attack the cross.

Coaching Points - CM taking the bounce pass on his furthest away foot to quickly open his body and pass the ball quickly out.

Moving with the ball as it travels to provide support and defensive cover.

Ball will ideally be played just infront of the wide midfielder so that they can move onto it and attack the mannequin.

Progression - Replace the mannequins with Live defenders. This might encourage 2 or 3 switches of play before the cross is delivered.

UEFA B Switch of Play Component 2 (20 mins)

This is a UEFA B Licence Component 2 drill concentrating on a Switch of Play.

Set-Up - Pitch is divided into thirds ( 2 wide sections and a central zone). This will clearly mark out the zones I would like the ball to travel through when performing a Switch.

Teams set up in a 2-3-2 formation.

Condition - If the play is started in the right zone it must make its way to the Left hand zone before an attack can take place. The ball can travel from side to side as many times as needed, but must be minimum of 1 switch.

Condition 2 - In each of the wide zones a 2v1 can take place but no more than this. This is too encourage ball retention and allow more success on the attacking side.

It will look at the movements and options given by the players involved in a switch of play.

Set-Up - Blue 4-2-1 Red 2-4-2

- Ball starts from Red Centre Backs

- Work the ball into a wide area and look for a deep lying player (CM or CB) to become a link player to the other side.

- Try and work the switch in as high up the pitch as possible.

Coaching Points - Movement by Link player to receive ball on the half turn. Quality of Play (Distances, Passes, Touches, Communication).

Un-Selfish runs with or without the ball to clear space to open up channels to make the switch easier. (Checking away from defender or playing a bounce pass will drag out defenders)

Playing the ball out wide early and look for the channels to open to hit strikers as early as possible.

Player passing the ball out wide may have to shift across to provide defensive cover or additional support to the player receiving.
