Positional Exercise (15 mins)

Main Moment - Defending

Key Priciples -

1) Deny Space and Time

2) Prevent Goal Scoring Opportunities

3) Win the Ball.

How to Play

Coach plays into one of the three attackers.

Attackers - Your aim is to combine with other two attackers to pass/dribble through one of the 3 small goals but you must stay in your own channel. Attackers can score through any goal.

Defenders - Win the ball and play to team mate or waiting Red player.

Coaching points:

1) Nearest defender pressure on ball carrier as quickly as possible (but don't get beaten). Be sure that if the player you are pressuring passes the ball you get back to cover quickly (see details below)

2) Other defenders cover -

- be in a position to help pressuring defender if they get beaten

- be in a position where you can see the attacker with the ball, see the nearest attacker to you and are protecting the goals

If you do this it should be very difficult for the attckers to score - be patient with your defending, wait for a mistake and then pounce!!!!! The defensive shape in the diagram is good defensive positioning.

Once a goal is scored or defenders win the ball and play to waiting players, the game starts again with the new defenders and attackers. (Reds and Blue swap ends after your turn)

Points

Attackers - 1 point for dribbling/passing through the goal

Defenders - 1 point for winning the ball and making a pass to waiting players

Progression

Take away middle two cones and have players free to roam anywhere in the area - ensure that nearest defenders still pressures the ball and other defenders are acting as cover to protect the small goals and pressure when ball is passed to player nearest them.

How to Play

Normal football rules apply except no corners (ball to start with GK of team who won the corner) and kic in's instead of throw in's.

Both teams set up in a GK-2-3-1 formation.

If Red win the ball and score they score points -

- Win the ball in area A and score = 3 points

- Win the ball in area B and score = 2 points

- Win the ball in area C and score = 1 point

Blue score the same points when red have possession of the ball.
